Thanks and Reflection, From the Other Washington, Transit Jobs, and Transit in the News Vol. 11, Issue 22: August 14, 2026 View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/97f3dc200897/the-wsta-weekly-17997465?e=850008f825> <https://mcusercontent.com/6c70c3a1d76c22fe2ef2a8361/images/0215a8c9-44a7-2be0-30d1-b2a80c32f66a.png> <https://mcusercontent.com/6c70c3a1d76c22fe2ef2a8361/images/f41858c3-0680-bd85-8ca7-3c5aa7c72dce.png> As we close the week, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and, most importantly, thank everyone who joined us for the 50th Washington State Public Transportation Conference, Vendor Expo, and State Roadeo in Tacoma. It was truley special to bring the Conference to my home in Tacoma! But first, I want to take a moment to pause and let the communities impacted by these fires know that the entire transit community is behind you, particularly our colleagues in Spokane. On August 1, around 2:30 p.m., Spokane Transit got the call to begin assisting with the evacuation of nearly one quarter of the city. While worrying about their own homes, personal property, and lives, Spokane Transit employees drove toward the flames to help their neighbors. They evacuated nearly 1,000 people through their services, including nearly 200 people with paratransit needs. Unfortunately, four Spokane Transit employees lost their homes to the fires, and over the past few weeks, more than 70 employees were under a Level 3 evacuation order themselves. To all of the employees and members of the Spokane community, we are thinking of you, we stand with you, and we are grateful for everything you have done. You have shown us something we already know to be true. Public transit and the people who keep it moving are essential, and they are resilient. When the call comes, we drive straight into the snow, the floods, or the fires to support our communities and help our neighbors. I put some photos below but here is a link to the photos taken that day. CLICK HERE <https://us.list-manage.com/VeLZGtRdZKI?e=850008f825&c2id=77e98cfa7fd6da3d15f6159cb76daba0> to see Spokane Tarnsit evacuation photos. The conference is a week-long event and its a big lift, and it takes a team of staff, volunteers, partners, vendors, and sponsors to make it happen. There may have been a few bumps and bruises along the way, literally, from taking down that wall—but everyone worked hard to make the week as smooth and successful as possible. A huge thank you to Brenda, Brandy, and Melanie, our WSTA staff, and to our volunteers, Marshall and Arnaldo, for all of their work—not just over the past week, but over the last several months to make this conference happen. To think, we were already starting to plan next year’s conference back in April! Thank you to Don Chartock and his entire team at WSDOT for supporting the conference through sessions, programming, and the Wall of Fame Banquet. WSDOT’s partnership with WSTA has been a vital part of the success of our conferences, and I am grateful to Don and everyone at WSDOT who put time and effort into making this year’s conference special. It’s also not easy being a host agency. It takes a tremendous amount of time, effort, supplies, coordination, and ideas to support the nearly 600 people who came to Tacoma over the course of the week. Thank you to Pierce Transit and all of their staff for being such an incredible host and for everything you did to support the conference. And, of course, we couldn’t have all the fun and memorable experiences without our vendors and, particularly, our sponsors. Your participation in the Expo and your sponsorships allow us to keep registration prices lower while still providing the extras that make this conference special. That includes those of you who took “8 p.m. to close” very literally and kept things going until 2 a.m. on Wednesday night! Many of you have asked about conference photos and presentations. I’ll be sending those out to attendees, along with our post-conference survey, early next week. There is so much I could stop and reflect on after a week like this, but I’ll end with this: We are all here today standing on the shoulders of those who came before us over the last 50 years. And one day, you will be the shoulders that someone else stands on as we look toward the future. Be the Golden Route and stay in motion! For a better, brighter future for us all! <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6c70c3a1d76c22fe2ef2a8361/images/96275218-1924-4dfd-a90c-fc4153a1ab38.jpg> Justin D.
