A new beginning for a 123-year-old boat <https://mcusercontent.com/cb069e2ef93881d477105d51f/images/43007cf0-2d81-a0cd-50ce-3d5c318eb7d3.jpg> Dear Adiel, If you’re coming to the Wooden Boat Festival next month, be sure to see Ziska, a beautifully restored boat built and launched in England in 1903. Ziska has lived a long, remarkable life, and her next chapter is being written as you read this. Built as a racing cruising yacht, Ziska spent her first two decades sailing mostly out of the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Ireland, then served as a family cruising boat until World War II. The next several decades were a tempestuous time for Ziska. A storm left her nearly wrecked on the rocks in 1974. What followed was a succession of owners and wild swings between intensive restoration and neglect, with an Atlantic crossing in between. Ziska found her way to Port Townsend, and eventually into the hands of her most recent previous owner, who worked with the best local wooden boat craftspeople to get her not just back into the water, but racing and finishing the 2019 Race to Alaska. Earlier this year, Jeremy Schmich became Ziska’s current steward, and he is preparing her for her next chapter: a life of ocean cruising. And just as Jeremy carries Ziska forward into her next century, each of us has the opportunity to do the same for the people, organizations, and values we care about most.
