WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced the creation of a $29 million fund that will provide assistance to eligible homeless Veterans and Veterans participating
in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program.
The Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act authorizes VA to provide this assistance to eligible homeless Veterans through the end of FY2027.
The law specifically enables VA to provide:
* Goods and services, such as food, shelter, clothing, blankets and hygiene items, as well as tablets, smartphones, disposable phones and other technology that supports the stability
and health of Veterans by facilitating easier connection with service providers, prospective landlords, and family members.
* Transportation that helps Veterans attend medical appointments, search for housing and employment, or obtain food and supplies.
As part of the program, VA medical centers will be able to provide goods and services to Veterans, starting in early FY2027. Up to $11 million worth of this aid will be distributed to
homeless Veterans upon the recommendation of VA clinicians across the country, and VA will track the distribution of this assistance nationally.

VA is also inviting transportation companies to submit proposals to offer transportation services to homeless Veterans so they can attend medical appointments, counseling and other necessary
appointments. VA expects to award these contracts by September 2026, and once they are operating, VA expects to provide up to $18 million worth of free transportation services for homeless

HUD-VASH program combines:
• A Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) from HUD that helps pay rent for qualifying housing
• VA case management and supportive services that help Veterans remain successfully housed
Unlike programs that only provide housing assistance, HUD-VASH pairs a housing voucher with ongoing support tailored to each Veteran’s needs. This may include connections to health care,
mental health care, substance use treatment, employment resources, and other services that help Veterans maintain stable housing over time.
Since 2008, HUD has awarded more than 116,000 HUD-VASH vouchers, including Tribal HUD-VASH rental subsidies. The program operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands.

The mission of NW MIRECC is to improve the quality of life and function of Veterans by developing, evaluating, and promoting the implementation of effective treatments for Posttraumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its complex comorbidities. PTSD comorbidities include the behavioral consequences of repetitive blast mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), Substance Use Disorder
(SUD), chronic pain (in particular, post-concussive headaches), cognitive impairment, and increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders (chronic traumatic encephalopathy [CTE] and
Alzheimer’s disease [AD]). VA MIRECC's provide for the improvement of the provision of health-care services and related counseling services to eligible veterans suffering from mental
illness (especially mental illness related to service-related conditions) through—
• the conduct of research (including research on improving mental health service facilities of the Department and on improving the delivery of mental health services by the Department);
• the education and training of health care personnel of the Department; and
• the development of improved models and systems for the furnishing of mental health services by the Department.

The Department of Veterans Affairs comprises 5 Veterans Integrated Service Networks or VISNs — regional care systems working together to better meet local healthcare needs and provide
greater access to care. NW MIRECC serves VA facilities within Pacific West VISN 5 (formerly VISN 20) and the larger VA system. This important work spans several time zones and is only
possible through productive collaborations with local and national academic, government, industry, military, and community partners. As part of the NW MIRECC mission to enhance access
to mental health expertise, the NW MIRECC collaborates and consults with other MIRECCs and Centers of Excellence, as well as with other VA, Department of Defense (DoD), Federal, State
departments of Veterans Affairs, community agencies, and experts. The close geographic proximity (40 miles) of DoD Joint Base Lewis-McChord/Madigan Army Medical Center to VAPSHCS has
provided an exciting opportunity to develop innovative and productive research, education, and clinical care collaborations with DoD personnel that address PTSD and its associated conditions
in their early stages in active-duty Servicemembers.
VA ranks as one of the nation's leaders in health research. NW MIRECC research studies significantly contribute to advancements in our understanding of medical problems that lead to
health improvements for Veterans and civilians alike. Every year, thousands of research studies are conducted at VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes. Research
