During this time, the public can urge the Forest Service to maintain the rule <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjQ5NzN9AAcAAAAABXusn5Es5Syw0kUWh0k-lHj i4pZFkhNBMo7NcMMot7wKBulfI6lwcF045NvsuMl8d7h49G7ecUM3lB1r9P8o3KrnaIHspZKvx_S3EuE> that protects undeveloped roadless areas across the country, including parts of Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Olympic National Forest, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The USDA’s proposed rule would rescind the Roadless Rule in its entirety, removing protections from nearly two million acres of roadless areas in Washington, opening them to road building, mining, drilling, and logging. In response, the Sierra Club Washington Chapter released a series of statements denouncing the proposed repeal, citing the Roadless Rule’s overwhelming support among Americans, the importance of these protections for clean air, clean water, cultural traditions, wildlife, and recreational opportunities, and the false claims that the rule increases wildfire risk. Salmon Have No Choice When It Comes to Cold, Clean Water. Salmon rely on cold rivers to survive, but in the Snake and Columbia rivers, eight dams have transformed once-free-flowing waters into a deadly gauntlet of hot, stagnant reservoirs. As the climate crisis makes the already dangerously warm conditions behind the dams increasingly lethal, the Sierra Club is again partnering with the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition in producing the annual Hot Water Report <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjQ5NzN9AAcAAAAABXusn5EuQWnrtwqfBu1070EpjCwIroIVnr1WkAv41Gv6nwOgcd-lC_YTnpVvH6iDS2WxxIhbQFUEOqO4pvE5 KYoWNpdJoACkpABkt_I> . The latest edition shows that the four Lower Snake river dams are averaging temperatures 2 degrees warmer than critical biological and legal harm threshold. There is no denying that we are racing against the clock to save our salmon. But the good news?—We already have the tools to build a reliable, clean energy system while restoring the cold-water habitat these iconic fish need. Learn why removing the four lower Snake River dams is essential to giving salmon a fighting chance—and how an opportunity to weigh in on the Northwest’s energy choices can help make it possible. The Council will be taking public comment until October 16. Written comments will be supplemented by hearings in each Northwest state, with those In Washington expected to be held in Seattle and Spokane. There’s a lot to like in the draft plan, including 9000 megawatts of new renewable resources. There are also more questionable elements, such as the proposal to build more than 2000 megawatts of new natural gas-fired power plants and a controversial proposal to pay more for conservation west of the Cascades than in the eastern half of the region. You can look for a more detailed alert and guidance on how to comment and what specific improvement in the draft that the Sierra Club recommends in the near future. Helping to set the stage is a recent Seattle Times opinion piece by Washington Council member KC Golden, a long-time leader in the fight against climate change. Sierra Club Washington Advocacy Director, Mariska Kecskés reflects on the 50th anniversary celebration of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness held last month. Taking time to recognize the victories we’ve fought for can renew our energy, strengthen our connections, and sustain us for the work still ahead. The reflection explores why making space for joy and gratitude is essential to building movements that last. By Lehman Holder, Loo Wit Group Outings Leader For many Sierra Club staff, members, and supporters, exploring and enjoying our wild places is the entry point to our work as conservationists and activists. As the nation's oldest adventure outfitter, Sierra Club Outings is a valuable and beloved part of our organization, one that continues to invite people into a growing community of connection, adventure, and stewardship. Here in Southwest Washington, I’ve had the immense privilege of leading outings for the Loo Wit Group for many years. I led my first Sierra Club outing in 1973, shortly after I had joined the Club while living in Austin, TX. That first outing was a hike through a park and swimming area called Barton Springs. I’ve lost count of the number of outings I’ve led since then, but they’ve included a variety of outdoor activities in many places and have all been exciting and fun. Every outing has been special, though, because of those who participated. Local outings, those sponsored by local Sierra Club groups and chapters, are often free or donation-based and open to all. Whether you’re joining us for a paddle down the East Fork Lewis River or birding in the Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge, Loo Wit Group outings are a great way to meet new people, get outside, and learn more how to become active in the Club's conservation efforts. As an outings leader of many years, the experiences and the connections I’ve made have enriched my life. I have only one regret: that I can't do it all over again! So I hope you will join me on the next trip I’m leading, flat water kayaking on the North Fork Lewis River near Vancouver. Turnout ran low even by primary standards, and Democratic enthusiasm wasn't exactly roaring, but Republican turnout lagged even further behind, a gap that shows up in race after race. Now, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering changes that could allow higher levels of radioactive pollution in our air and water and put workers and nearby communities at greater risk.
