Dear John,
The Trump administration just handed the oil and gas industry a gift-wrapped giveaway. This deal is hiding in a bureaucratic rulemaking that most people will never hear about. But these
rules will impact the air we breathe, the wild places we visit, and the public lands we all treasure.
For those of us who live and recreate on Western public lands, rules like these will determine whether or not we see a landscape of abandoned oil wells and fragmented habitat. These
rulemaking changes will also determine if we can use our voice in the decision making process. Significantly, oil and gas leasing rules will determine if sites of cultural or historic
significance are protected or leased to the highest bidder.
If this rule goes through, the Bureau of Land Management would no longer have to consider prior to leasing:
* Critical wildlife habitat
* Distance to existing infrastructure
* The actual likelihood that oil and gas are even there
* Cultural and historic resources
That's not streamlining. That's clearing the way for Big Oil to drill first and ask questions never. It's time to push back and let the Bureau of Land Management know that they should

It gets worse. The proposal would also gut the public's voice, eliminating your ability to weigh in during scoping and on draft environmental review documents for oil and gas lease sales.
It would also shrink public participation to a 10-day protest window after the lease sale has already happened. The Bureau of Land Management has even suggested it might skip environmental
review at the leasing stage entirely. That's a dangerous precedent for every public land decision that follows.
There's also an extra sweet part of the deal for the oil and gas industry: bonding rates, the funds meant to ensure cleanup after drilling, would be rolled back to 1960s levels. Decades
of inflation later, taxpayers would be left to foot the bill when companies walk away from their mess. Big Oil shouldn't be able to profit off of public lands without any thought to
the consequences.
