Washington. 98368 'li- www.jeffensoncountypubllchealth.org May 10, 2011 JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners Philip Morley, County Administrator FROM: Stuart Whitford, Environmental Health Director DATE: Ju he.- I 3 . do II SUBJECT: Agenda Item - Agency Agreement with Department of Ecology for Jefferson County Lakes Toxic Algae Project #G1100251; April 1, 2011 - March 31, 2012; $40,000 STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Jefferson County Public Health is requestlng Board approval of the Agency Agreement with Department of Ecology for Jefferson County Lakes Toxic Algae Project #G1100251i April 1, 2011 - March 31, 2012i $40,000 ANALYSIS/STRATEGIC GOALS/PROS and CONS: The Jefferson County Lake Assessment Project has four primary goals: prevent human and anlmallllnesses from bluegreen algae (cyanobacterial) blooms, prOvide Information to the public and land managers, proVide data to determine If remedial actions are possible and to Inform and educate other jurisdictions on . , how to respond to bluegreen algae blooms. These goals wllI be met by a regular sampling program targeting Anderson Lake, Lake Leland, Gibbs Lake and Sandy Shore Lake for bluegreen algae, toxldty and nutrients. This grant wllI also provide funds to hold public meetings with lake users and Interested parties to educate them about toxic blooms. FISCAL IMPACT/COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS: This contract requires 25% matching funds In the amount of $10,000. The matching funds will come from Clean Water District funds. The Department of Ecology will fund the grant at 75% totaling $30,000.
