“Do You Know the Wonders a Smile Can Work?” — A Farewell from Natalia
<https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/d208bd68-44dc-c16e-2a10-81f3a2cb7b96.jpeg>
Do you know the wonders a smile can work?
I know,
because the most beautiful people in my life arrived
with a smile as a calling card...
There were no expectations, but just a genuine
interaction, one of respect and acknowledgement
of each other’s presence... one where
my language, my accent, and our color of skin
didn’t matter...
I know,
because during my hardest moments working
at JCIRA, a volunteer smile accompanied
with words of encouragement would help
keep me going...
I know,
because there were times when I didn’t
feel I deserved to be sitting at the table with
other community leaders,
and like many Immigrants, questioned
whether I belonged... feeling awkward and insecure...
But there was always someone that,
in silence, would look me in the eye,
smile and nod as sign of
reassurance to me... telling me without
words: "Continue, you belong and I see you..."
I know,
Because of an immigrant woman
Who I have supported and talked with on the phone...
When we finally met, she knew my name;
she had the biggest smile on her face and said,
"You are Natalia!" and gave me a big hug...
As if I had done something other than the human
thing to do... hearing her and seeing her...
I know,
the wonders a smile can work because...
That is the reason I still believe in humanity,
in case you didn’t know...
Thank you JCIRA for all the lessons that I hold with gratitude in my heart, and that will help me move into my new chapter as an advocate!
I am smiling at you in the community!
An original work by Natalia Durán
💛 💌 🤝 Natalia, you will be missed!
Dear Natalia,
There is so much to thank you for!
As JCIRA’s first hired staffer when you joined as Outreach Coordinator in 2022, you were there to give the organization a big boost and to open the doors of our first Multicultural Center.
Even more importantly, you built valuable and lasting connections with members of the immigrant community across Jefferson and Clallam Counties, as well as the partner organizations
vital to our mission.
Natalia, you brought your whole self, heart and soul, to JCIRA, and it will be a changed place without you.
Thank you for sharing your compassion, commitment, ingenuity, and sparkling personality, which brightened even the most challenging moments. Your dedication shone through everything
you accomplished—from developing the Women's Justice Circle to support local women's empowerment, coordinating mental health services and requests for financial assistance, and organizing
community workshops, to sharing your artistic talents at family cultural events, advocating for immigrant children in schools, and continuously finding creative ways to lead our outreach
efforts.
Your warmth and generous spirit will not be forgotten. We at JCIRA wish you the very best in all your future endeavors, and I am certain we will continue to hear about your many contributions
to community empowerment in the months and years to come.
Again, mil gracias to you!
Adelante, Natalia❤️

💛 Ways to Get Involved
Support Noune’s Fight Against Deportation
For decades, the United States and Laos maintained an understanding regarding status and deportations, allowing longtime residents and refugees like Noune to build their lives safely.
Recent sudden policy shifts and broken agreements between the U.S. and Lao governments have thrown these protections into chaos.
Now, Noune, a devoted partner to Joanna and the sole provider for their 1-year-old baby has been swept up by ICE (right at his place of employment on his lunch break).
He is facing a sudden legal crisis and needs our immediate help to secure specialized immigration counsel so he can stay home where he belongs.

Support Raul After a Serious Workplace Accident
On June 18, 2026, Raul suffered a serious accident while working in Port Angeles. Raul works in drywall construction, and while on the job, the ladder he was standing on suddenly gave
way. He fell and landed on both of his hands, breaking both wrists.
As a result of his injuries, Raul now faces surgery and a long recovery. Because his livelihood depends entirely on the use of his hands, he is unable to work and will be without income
for the foreseeable future.
Our family is now facing mounting medical expenses, lost wages, and the daily challenges that come with caring for someone recovering from such severe injuries. This has been an overwhelming
and unexpected hardship, but we are hopeful that with the support of our community, Raul can focus on healing without the added burden of financial stress.

Winter Work Clothing Donations Needed
Families are feeling the pinch on all sides, especially as income-earners are either too fearful of being detained or have already been detained.
JCIRA is collecting donations of clean, warm, durable clothing to support a broad collection by local mutual aid groups. (these are not JCIRA donations directly but will be transferred
for delivery to families via mutual aid.)
Winter hats, goggles, gloves, new underwear/long johns, flannel shirts, coats, warm easy-to dry socks, work boots and children's winter jackets. Donations can be brought to JCIRA during
open hours and placed in the Volunteer Office.
Drop off will occur every Friday afternoon through November 6th. Contact volunteer@jcira.org <mailto:volunteer@jcira.org?subject=&body=> with any questions. Thank you! Mil gracias!

Attorneys warn of devastating consequences after Tacoma court blocks immigration lawyers from appearing remotely
Immigration attorneys across Oregon, Idaho and Alaska are scrambling to appear in person at the Tacoma Immigration Court after judges in mid-August stopped allowing them to appear remotely
on behalf of clients detained at the regional detention center. Oregon, Idaho and Alaska don’t have immigration detention centers and most immigrants detained by federal authorities
in those states are taken to the regional detention center in Tacoma, Washington.
“Most concerning is that, to my knowledge, this is not the result of a published regulation or a nationally announced policy. It appears to be a practice adopted by the Tacoma Immigration
Court itself,” Olano said. “When an unwritten local practice substantially interferes with a detained person’s ability to be represented by the attorney that person selected, serious
due-process and statutory right-to-counsel concerns arise.”

📖 Book of the Month: The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio

This month’s community Book of the Month recommendaiton comes from Melissa!
Writer Karla Cornejo Villavicencio was on DACA when she decided to write about being undocumented for the first time using her own name. It was right after the election of 2016, the
day she realized the story she’d tried to steer clear of was the only one she wanted to tell. So she wrote her immigration lawyer’s phone number on her hand in Sharpie and embarked
on a trip across the country to tell the stories of her fellow undocumented immigrants—and to find the hidden key to her own.
Check it out for yourself from our library system or pick it up at a local bookstore!

<https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/d208bd68-44dc-c16e-2a10-81f3a2cb7b96.jpeg>
no importaban...
me ayudaba a seguir adelante...
palabras: «Sigue adelante, perteneces aquí y te veo»...
Lo sé,
gracias a una mujer inmigrante
a la que he apoyado y con la que he hablado por teléfono...
Cuando por fin nos conocimos, ella sabía mi nombre;
