HomeMy WebLinkAbout100826 - Press Release_ Jefferson County Returns to a Low Fire Danger Rating on October 9_ 2026Good afternoon, The Jefferson County Fire Marshal and local Fire District Chiefs met on Thursday October 8, 2026, to review current weather, fuel moisture, and fire behavior conditions. Based on that assessment and engagement with state and regional officials, the county will return to a LOW Fire Danger rating. With the return of rain around the county, cooler temperatures, higher fuel moisture levels and the return of higher relative humidity, the Fire Chiefs and the County Fire Marshal agree that conditions warrant the lowering the fire danger level to LOW. Effective October 9, 2026, the Fire Danger Level will be lowered to a LOW. The decision to lower includes but is not limited to input received from Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Olympic Region Clean Air Agency (ORCAA), National Weather Service (NWS), and other state, federal, and local agencies. While risk to residents, property, and emergency responders has subsided to acceptable levels, this October remains drier than historical averages. It remains critically important to adhere to fire safety best practices and never leave a fire unattended. Additionally, no land clearing fires should be ignited without a burn permit from the appropriate local fire authority.
