Thank you Commissioners for your efforts in public participation in the SMP Update process. I am sorry to be a realist but I must say I have deep concerns for the County’s ability to get this done in time to preempt the WDOE changes, unless their early 2027 is sometime in late March. As to Jan Wold’s comments on mechanical clam diggers, in fact the physical process and effect is completely analogous to hand digging. No greater amount of tideland is moved and it ends up right back where it started from minus the clams. Clam farming is moving in this direction because hand digging, which I spent two years doing, is not a bad job but is physically demanding, dirty and requires being there at low tide whether it is light or dark, warm or freezing cold. The generation that will do this type of work seems to have got too old for it so we have problems finding farm crews.
