OCTOBER 2026
<https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/WAPARKS/2026/10/14541274/7185922/lake-wenatchee-fall_crop.jpg>
The understory is as spectacular as the maples and cottonwoods at Lake Wenatchee in fall.
Larches, aspen, maples and more: where to see fall color in Washington
The subalpine larches are done in the highlands, but you can still see western larches if you stay low on the eastside. We know a few places where they peak in mid-October, so let us
help you plan your last-minute getaway:
* Mount Spokane’s <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Fmount-spokane-state-park%3Futm_content=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_name=%26utm_source=govdel

park roads.
* Fields Spring <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Ffields-spring-state-park%3Futm_content=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_name=%26utm_source=govdeliv

Here are some places to see red, orange and gold trees that are just as gorgeous as larches this month:
* North Cascades Hwy 20 passes Rasar State Park <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Frasar-state-park%3Futm_content=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_nam

State Park <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Fpearrygin-lake-state-park%3Futm_content=%26utm_medium=email%26utm_name=%26utm_source=govdelivery

elusive than the larch, the aspens at Pearrygin turn gold this month. Both parks have camping <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwashington.goingtocamp.com%2F%3Fgad_campaignid=73240597

but the real showstoppers are the vine maples. Find them in the park, north of the park on Hwy 207 and 20 miles southeast on Icicle Creek Road. The red maples and yellow cottonwoods
on these roads should be popping for at least another 10 days.
* If you’re up for a scramble, don’t miss Mount Pilchuck <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Fmount-pilchuck-state-park%3Futm_content=%26utm_medi

at dusk, so the three groups of up to six people renting the homes have it to themselves. The same goes for Fort Columbia, a day-use park. The two groups of four and up to 12 renting
the Officer’s Home and Scarborough building have the park to themselves after dark.

This remote park turns into a Sno-Park with a long, steep sledding hill and snowshoe trails. The charming log cabin sleeps four to 20 people in its upstairs bunk room, with a fireplace,

Dry Falls Visitor Center is a work in progress right now; here it is captured in scaffolding on a beautiful morning at dawn.
Status update: Dry Falls Visitor Center construction
If you’ve driven down SR17 lately, you might have done a double take passing the Dry Falls Visitor Center. According to our rangers, the building is currently a vivid hue - somewhere
between Smurf and sky blue!
This blue coating is actually a protective layer put in place by our contractor before they apply new exterior stucco.
What’s done so far:
* Plumbing, including water distribution for planting beds
* Parking lot, including ADA parking spots and a buffer between parking bumper blocks and the overlook’s stone wall
* Concrete sidewalk leading to the stairs to the entrance
* Trenches for underground fiber
* New power poles
In progress:
* Stucco exterior
* New wheelchair lift
* Roof work
* Heat and AC
* Electrical work
* Toilet installation
Silver linings:
During last summer’s wildfires, a historic CCC-era pumphouse was lost, but crews were able to use some of those rocks to rebuild the historic rock wall at the visitor center’s overlook.
Despite summer wildfires, poor AQ and a 48-day water shutoff, we anticipate reopening this critical stop on the National Ice Age Geologic Trail <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.np

Reid Harbor off Stuart Island will be getting a makeover, starting this week!
Fall construction begins in the San Juan Islands
Beginning this month through early 2027, improvements are scheduled for Reid Harbor off Stuart Island <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Fstuart

Q-CT444uepwJzuE8=452> . In November work also begins at Sucia Island <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fparks.wa.gov%2Ffind-parks%2Fstate-parks%2Fsucia-island-marine-state-park%3Futm_co

.
Work at Reid Harbor started Oct. 13 to replace the aging dock, retire old linear buoys and repair the bay’s pumpout station. The new dock will improve accessibility by making the grade
less steep, and the design includes grated decking to help light filter through to the shallow aquatic environment. The pumpout’s creosote piles will be removed and replaced with galvanized
steel piles.
In late November, pumpout installation begins at Fossil Bay off Sucia Island. The new pumpout station will be embedded in submerged rock, out of boaters’ way.
Mooring buoys will stay open at Reid Harbor and Fossil Bay, but boaters will hear construction noise and see a work barge and crane. There will be no open pumpout at Stuart Island during
construction. For a quieter stay, moor off Prevost Harbor at Stuart Island or one of the five other bays at Sucia.
