JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners Philip Morley, County AdminiRtrator FROM: Leslie Locke, Deputy Clerk of the Board DATE: October 3, 2011 SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming October 2-8, 2011 as Mental Dlness Awareness Week STATEMENT OF ISSUE: A request from Darlene Grunke, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) bas been received for approval of the proclamation proclaiming October 2-8,2011 as Mental illness Awareness Week. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming October 2-8, 2011 as Mental illness Awareness Week. ~6~~" Date WHEREAS, one in Five Americans will be affected by mental illness that will create a disruption in their life, and the life of their family; and WHEREAS, undiagnosed mental illness can lead to suicide, incarceration, substance abuse and other harmful consequences; and WHEREAS, the National Alliance on Mentallllness (NAMI) and a Presidential Proclamation recognizes the week of October 2-8, 2011 as Mentallllness Awareness Week; and WHEREAS, Mentallllness Awareness Week seeks to increase people's understanding of the devastating impact of mental illness on the lives of individuals, their families and friends, and seeks to promote early diagnosis and treatment; and WHEREAS, while there is no cure for mental illness, there are effective treatment options that can help those with mental illness lead fulfilling lives. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on behalf of the citizens of Jefferson County, do hereby proclaim the week of October 2-8, 2011 as MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEIt and encourage all residents of Jefferson County to educate themselves about mental illness, participate in educational activities and if necessary engage themselves or their families in a successful treatment program.
