WHEREAS, one in Pive ;americans will be affected by mental illness that will create a
disruption in their life. and the life of their Family; and
WHEREAS, undiagnosed mental illness can lead to suicide, incarceration, substance abuse attd
other harmful consequences: and
WHF_REAS, the \ational Alliance on Mental Illness (1\'Ah41) attd a Presidential Proclamation
recognizes the week of October 7-l j, 2012 as Mental Illness Awareness ~'~'cck: attd
WHEREAS, Alental Illness Awareness ~4'eek seeks to increase people's understanding of the
devastating impact of mental illness on the hues of individuals, their families and friends. and seeks to
promote early diagnosis and trcaunent: and
WHEREAS, while there is no cure for ntcntal illness. there at•e effective treatment options that
can help those with mental ilhtess lead lultilline lives.

behalf ofthe citizens of Jefferson County. do hereby proclaim the ~m~cck of October 7-13, 2012 as
MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK
attd encourage all residents of.leffcrson Counri to educate themsehes about mental illness, patticipa[e in
educational activities and if necessan engage thcroseh es or their families in a successful treaunent
program.
