SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing various road maintenance tasks including
mowing county lawns and rights of way, plowing snow and sanding, cleaning drainage ditches and
patching various roads. This position receives general supervision and direction from the Area
Foreman and the Road Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Ability to operate a loader, power broom, brushcutter, low boy and truck, 10 -yard dump truck and
trailer, roller, chipper, airsaw, curber, line remover, road grader and distributor, and various hand
tools
Know how to operate a dozer, chip spreader, backhoe, layton box, grader, belt loader, track loader,
and excavator.
Ability to coordinate materials, manpower and equipment for various road maintenance needs.
Ability to prioritize road maintenance for area of assignment
Ability to provide small project support, i.e. paperwork, purchasing, supplies, right -of -way, permit
compliance, document road project status, and apply for necessary permits if needed.
Accountable for specific project steps, work in a team based environment and participate in the
annual training program and annual performance evaluation process.
Participates in self directed team process to set work level expectations, goals and objectives.
Perform other tasks as directed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Persons in this position are given significant discretion, within the scope of policy and regulations, in
the routine performance of their duties; supervision and guidance are received from the Leadman,
Foreman and the Operations Manger.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

EDUCATION and /or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), with six (6) years experience in road
building activities or related experience, and demonstrated ability to operate equipment
identified in the Essential Duties and Responsibilities Section of this job description; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and obtain certificates
necessary for functional skills performance, maintenance and improvement.
LANGUAGE SHILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and
interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished
in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Washington State Driver's License
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License
OTHER SHILLS and ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of county policies and procedures as it relates to road maintenance duties.
Good health, good physical condition and the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
Familiarity with tools, instruments, equipment and techniques commonly used in the performance of
road maintenance.
Maintains a high standard for accuracy, completeness and efficiency in the preparation of reports.
Ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm in stressful
situations, relate to various personality styles in a calm, professional manner.
Effectively communicates with others for purposes of gathering and relating information.

Understands the need for maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
Independent and self motivated to complete required deadlines while simultaneously completing other
tasks.
Skilled in road maintenance techniques.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and

caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock when working with underground
and/or overhead utilities, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
