SWAC Staff Report
❖ Revenue
Revenues are at 4.13% above the 2012 level for the same time period last year (Jan. and Feb. totals).
Perhaps we've reached the bottom of a sustained downward trend.
❖ 2013 Vermicomposting Workshops
The first of the two 2013 workshops was held as part of the Jefferson County Health and Wellness
Fair last Saturday with over 40 attendees. Thanks to the City of Port Townsend's contribution, an
additional 20 bins are being built for workshop goers so that the total number of bins given out for
this two year project will total 130.
Sunfield Farm in Port Hadlock will host the next workshop on May 4th. Over 30 people have
registered already.
❖ Tipping Fee Planning
Staff is fine tuning the recommendation to the County Administrator and Board of County
Commissioners on an increase of the tipping fee for Municipal Solid Waste. A few elements of our
Capital Facility replacement plan need to be more fully developed before the final recommendation
can be made
❖ Coordinated Prevention Grant Planning for 2013 -2014
With concurrence from the City of Port Townsend and Public Health, Public Works will continue to
set aside $47,500 for each of the two years of the grant cycle — or a total value of $95,000 - for solid
waste education and outreach as conducted by Public Health. Public Works will use the remaining
balance of grant funds ($73,536) to offset costs associated with the County's recycling program. The
$73, 536 is less two full quarters of the recycling budget.
