RE: Climate Preparedness Plan Presentation and Comprehensive Plan Update
______________________________________________________________________________________
One of the community supported topics to address for the comprehensive plan update is climate change.
Currently, there is not a section regarding climate change within Jefferson County’s Comprehensive Plan.
There is a joint City/County Climate Action Committee appointed in 2007 and 2008 through County
Resolution Numbers 44-07 and 02-08. The Climate Action Committee was charged with the task to
develop a Climate Action Plan. The plan adopted on November 11, 2011 by County Resolution Number
53-11, recommends how to achieve the goal of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from
1990 levels by the year 2050.
As climate change is a complex topic, we will need to focus on aspects which pertain directly to land use
policy for our comprehensive plan update.
Tonight we have the opportunity to see a presentation on the Climate Change Preparedness Plan for the
North Olympic Peninsula. The North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation & Development Council
(NOP RC&D) recently published this 200-page report on projected climate change in the region. The full
report can be found on the NOP RC&D website at: www.noprcd.org. The report includes the most recent
data as well as localized research by Dr. Ian Miller of Peninsula College/ Washington Sea Grant and
consultants from Adaptation International, in addition to a broad range of input from partners with
expertise from natural resource managers to planners.
Our staff is looking forward to viewing this presentation with the Planning Commission at the November
4th meeting as we continue to consider comprehensive plan amendments.
