Re: Soil Bearing Loads
Cable Lift at 530 Reinier Road

Dear Mr. Sprague:
I have reviewed the bearing loads for the machinery and equipment for a cable lift at the
shoreline bluff located at 530 Reiner Road. The bearing loads were calculated by Anthony James
Holt, P.E. Loads for the top of the bluff were calculated to be 525 psf and 1480 psf for the
supports.
The upper 10 feet of the bluff face and upland area on the property are underlain by very compact
glacial till. The till was deposited directly by glacial ice during the last glacial period. The till is
in turn underlain by compact advance glacial outwash sand and gravel. The advance outwash was
deposited by melt water streams and rivers from the advancing Puget ice lobe just prior to the last
glacial period. Both the till and the underlying outwash have been highly compacted by the mass
of the over riding glacial ice. The ice thickness is estimated to have been on the order 3,500 feet
at this location.
The bearing capacity of the soil at the top of the bluff is far greater than the loads expected from
the lift machinery and equipment.
The bearing of the sandy gravel beach with underlying bedrock at the bottom of the lift is greater
than the expected 340 psf vertical load and 90 psf horizontal load.
