HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-03-08Board’s Official Business Highlights from Monday’s Commissioner Meeting June 3, 2008 PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: Thefollowing comments were made bycitizens: There is a lack of security for theCourthouse and a deputized officer isneeded in the room during theCommissioners meetings as well as sometype of screening; as pointed out in theLeader, open government is necessary; acitizen is being made a scapegoat for thepolitical polarization in this County; whereis the culture of leadership in this County?;a citizen asked that the Board createpolicies to advocate for citizens who haveto heat with wood, that scotch broom bemowed down before it goes to seed, andpeople who live off the grid are not able toget homeowners insurance or cropinsurance; a request that CommissionerAustin address the issue of his commentsabout the quasi judicial powers of theCommissioners; the people need to knowthat the elected officials understand thelaw and are operating within it; and acitizen is upset that the CountyAdministrator said that he can't authorizethe public to handout political flyers in theCourthouse. CONSENT AGENDA: The Boardapproved all the items on the ConsentAgenda as presented. RESOLUTION: Implementing Safety andRisk Management Policies with Regard toNon Public Spaces in County Facilities 2 HEARING NOTICES: 1) Ordinance No.05-0505-08 Enacting a Moratorium Againstthe Issuance of Permits or ApprovalsPertaining to Adult Businesses; HearingScheduled for Monday, June 16, 2008 at10:45 a.m.; 2) Development Standards forSigns; JCC 18.30.150; Hearing Scheduledfor Monday, June 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.;both hearings are in the Commissioners’Chambers 3 AGREEMENTS: 1) Pre-VocationalSpecialized Industries; SkookumCorporation; 2) Group SupportedEmployment; Skookum Corporation; and 3) Individual Supported Employment; SkookumCorporation Advisory Board Resignation; Olympic AreaAgency on Aging (O3A) Advisory Board;Robert Bentley Advisory Board Appointment; Olympic AreaAgency on Aging (O3A) Advisory Board; ToServe a 3 Year Term Expiring June 2, 2011;Chuck SherredPayment of JC Vouchers/ Warrants DatedMay 27, 2008 Totaling $412,382.16 and$2,500.00 Commissioners Briefing Session: The Boardmembers reviewed the following: • The special meeting in Grays Harborlast week with the Quinault IndianNation and the Grays Harbor CountyCommissioners. Chairman Johnsonnoted that he would rather have twointer-local agreements instead of justone, but there are some fee simpleproperties that straddle both counties.There will be another meeting scheduledto discuss this complicated issue. Commissioner Austin noted that theappellate body for Grays Harbor Countyis different than it is in Jefferson County. • The Climate Action Committee had itsfirst meeting last week. Kees Kolf hasbeen elected Chair of this Committee.There was a broad representation ofpeople at the meeting. • A letter was approved to be sent to theCounty’s congressional delegationregarding keeping the Falls ViewCampground open longer during thecamping season. AUTHORIZING the Appointment of a DeputyProsecuting Attorney: The Board authorizedthe Prosecuting Attorney to appoint MarkJohnsen as a Special Deputy ProsecutingAttorney to handle 3 land use petitions thatwere received recently. PROCLAMATION: The Board approved theproclamation for Jefferson County MasterGardeners Week June 1 through 7, 2008.
