Highlights from Monday’s Commissioner Meeting October 21, 2008
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: The following
comments were made by citizens: 15 citizens
commented that they support the County
providing the funding requested to keep the
Mountain View Elementary School pool open
for many reasons including it being a place for
children to exercise and participate in
programs, a place for seniors and disabled
people to exercise and because of the maritime
activities in this community it is an essential
facility to teach people swimming and water
safety; a comment was made that it is felt that
mismanagement of the pool is causing the
funding problems; another person commented
that the people that use the pool need to pay
increased fees to support the operating costs; a
man stated that after reviewing the preliminary
budget, which includes a request for over
$219,000 for replacement of computers, that
the County needs to use computers for their
useful life and not just replace them because of
a replacement schedule the County has
adopted; another citizen commented that sales
are down in the City and County and the
country is in a recession and the County needs
to get people to come and shop in Port
Townsend; and another person pointed out that
he feels that replacement of a total computer is
seldom needed and that usually you can
upgrade items within the computer instead of
buying new ones and he added that economic
resiliency is needed in this County.

PRESENTATION by the FERRY ADVISORY
COMMITTEE: Ferry Advisory Committee
Chair, Tim Caldwell, reported that they have
been working with the State Ferries on an
mitigation alternative when the Hood Canal
Bridge is closed next year. The alternative
would be to have an Edmonds to Port
Townsend run in the evening primarily for
commercial traffic such as the truck traffic for
the Port Townsend Paper Mill and other mills
on the Peninsula. It was determined that an
Issaquah class ferry would not hold the
number of trucks that anticipate using this
service. They can get more vehicles on the
vessel if they only load trailers and they are
working to see how that can be done.
The vessel could also hold 1,300 walk on
passengers. They want to come up with a
marketing plan for the evening run into Port
Townsend including a Transit pass that would
allow passengers to get around once they are
here.
The ferry that is making the Port Townsend/
Keystone run right now will be out of service in
January for 2-3 weeks for a Coast Guard
required inspection.
