HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-08-13 PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: The following is a summary of comments made by citizens in attendance at the meeting and reflect their personal opinions: • A citizen stated they attended a City council meeting and inquired why the County did not seem concerned regarding the smart meter issue; • A citizen advised that; 1) The Seattle Foundation issued a $57,000 check towards renovating Worthington Park in Quilcene; and 2) The County needs to look into installing restrooms near the Big Quilcene River; • A citizen commented that he spoke with a San Juan County resident regarding Home-Rule. The resident stated citizens in San Juan County have a better opportunity to participate in local government; • A citizen stated that if, and, or when Home-Rule authority is granted to the citizens of Jefferson County, it should be permanent; and 2) Advisory measures should be placed on every ballot; • A citizen announced his dislike for the Department of Ecology (DOE) and his support for a Home-Rule Charter type of government; • A citizen commented 1) Interest rates are going up; 2) RoundUp residue is affecting the way European cattle digest food; 3) 40% of people will come down with Type 2 diabetes; 4) Women who take prenatal vitamins, have a less chance of having babies with autism; and 5) Having a Public Health Department is beneficial; • A citizen applauded the Home-Rule group’s efforts, but urged the Commissioners to be careful. He pointed out ways the Home-Rule group could be active in the current government activities; and • A citizen stated there are good cases made for Home-Rule government, but if passed, there should be a sunset clause added in case it ends up not working well. CONSENT AGENDA: The Board unanimously approved the items on the consent agenda as presented: 2 AGREEMENTS: 1) Oil Spill Response and Readiness; Northwest Straits Foundation; and 2) Consolidated Contract FY14-15; Fiscal Year 2014-2015; Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, Juvenile Justice Rehabilitation Administration Payment of Jefferson County Vouchers/Warrants Dated June 28, 2013 Totaling $801.05 COMMISSIONERS BRIEFING SESSION: The Commissioners each provided updates on the following items: Chairman Austin - Attended a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) meeting and stated it was interesting to see the process of reconveyance. - Enjoyed music and the patriotic atmosphere at the American Legion during the 4th of July holiday. Commissioner Johnson - The Olympic Region Clean Air Authority (ORCAA) will be measuring particulate matter at .1 micrometers and below. - Is excited about the ORCAA grant and other grants that the community has been receiving lately. - Also attended a DNR meeting last week. - Is looking into whether or not the Worthington Park grant was approved. - Will be attending an ORCAA meeting this weekend. - Plans on attending a Puget Sound Partnership (PSP) meeting and addressing some issues. Hearing Notice: The Board unanimously approved a Resolution in the matter of a hearing notice for the Proposed Formation of Park & Recreation District Located within Kala Point. The hearing is scheduled for Monday, August 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers. Closed Session re: Strategy or position for collective bargaining, professional negotiations, or grievance or mediation proceedings: The Board held a closed session which is excluded from the Open Public Meetings Act as outlined in RCW 42.30.140(4)(b).
