SUMMARY: Performs all levels of manual labor work on public roads, trails, and road rights-of-way.
Typically works as a crew member under frequent supervision in installation, repair and maintenance in
area of assignment by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Cleans ditches, culverts, gutters, sidewalks.
Performs traffic control per MUTCD in work zones; places signs and cones, directs traffic, and assists
motorists at various sites. Ability to use 2 -way radio.
Working with Operators, lays pipe and culverts. Cleans catch basins and culverts.
Cleans roadways and sidewalks using hand operated and power equipment such as weed eaters and
blowers.
Compacts backfill and asphalt with hand operated powered tampers, plate compactors, and walk -behind
rollers.
Removes asphalt and concrete with jackhammers and power saws.
Brush removal using chainsaws, air saws, clippers, hedge trimmers, brush chippers, and lawn mowers.
Weed control by pulling, weed eaters, and hand sprayers.
Cleans signs and other traffic control devices. Excavates holes for sign installation. Mixes concrete.
Inspects culverts and other roadway facilities.
Installs and removes erosion control BMPs.
Rakes asphalt, shovels asphalt, sweeps chip rock. Fills potholes with patching material.

Repairs guardrail; paints; installs curbs and sidewalks; installs and removes stripes and traffic control
devices.
Cleans, lubricates, fuels, adjusts, and maintains tools used to perform job responsibilities.
During winter storm events may operate non -CDL snow and ice control vehicles such as pickup/flatbed
truck mounted snow plow and sander or deicers.
Ability to respond to after-hours call out for emergency or storm related events.
Participates in annual training program and annual performance evaluation process.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Demonstrated
experience in road maintenance or road construction work.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and
memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present
information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and
other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and
percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate slope and
interpret grade stakes.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few
concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Washington State Driver's License
Successful completion of a certified and approved Traffic Flagging course and possession of a
valid Flagging and Traffic Control Card. Required to renew Flagging and Traffic Control Card
every 3 years or as required by current law.
First Aid/CPR certification required.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
Operates a variety of non -CDL on -road vehicles such as passenger cars, pickups, single -axle flatbed
truck, towing single -axle trailer behind pickup.
Familiarity with tools and equipment commonly found in performance of related tasks, including the
operation of equipment such as: crack sealer, walk behind paint striper equipment, hand- operated
equipment (power or hand), jack hammer, mechanical tamper, weed sprayer (hand or back pack),brush
chipper, power culvert cleaner, straw distributor, chain saw, air saw, concrete mixer, sand blaster, air
compressor, generator, walk -behind roller, jet rodder/vactor, fork lift.
Provides assistance to public including responding to customer inquiries, explaining rules and regulations,
and assisting with maintenance of public safety.
Maintains various records including work performed, time spent, materials used and related information;
enters and extracts data using automated systems; maintain manuals records as required.
Skill in effective communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information, and
to receive work direction.

Ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm in stressful
situations, relate to various personality styles in a calm, professional manner.
Ability to learn and operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable
laws or regulations.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and with other County
employees.
Ability to meet the assignment locations and travel requirements of the position.
Follows safety protocol for assigned tasks. Wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during
performance of tasks. Reads and follows instruction for safe operation of tools. Ability to read and
understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for products used in performance of the job.
