There was just an informal discussion that is outlined below. Welcome and Introductions: Brian MacKenzie introduced himself as the new Vice Principal for Chimacum High School. New CPWI Coordinator Kelly announced that Dr. Denise Banker has been hired to be the new CPWI Coordinator for the Chimacum Prevention Coalition. She will begin this new position on August 22nd, and will be at the September 14th meeting. She will be going through Strengthening Families Program facilitators training on August 24 – 26th. Kelly’s last day is August 31, 2016. New Notebooks for Board Members Because the Coalition will be doing a new strategic planning process starting this fall, Kelly made up new notebooks for board members. In the notebooks at this point are:  Preventing Drug Use among Children and Adolescents, a NIDA primer on prevention science;  A brief introduction to the Chimacum Prevention Coalition, its vision, mission, roles and responsibilities, and history  The Chimacum Prevention coalition By-Laws  A sample “elevator speech”  The March 2016 DBHR Data Book On the backside of the notebooks is a timeline for the coalition’s tasks for this next year. Kelly shared with the group that individual school district’s Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) results are not public record. County-wide Health Youth Survey data is. In order to be a Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative (CPWI) school district, Chimacum School Districts has agreed to allow coalition members access to Chimacum’s individual HYS in order to do the planning necessary for developing and implementing a new strategic plan. She asked members to treat this information confidentially, and to use it CHIMACUM PREVENTION COALITION Mission : Uniting kids, families and agencies in support of healthy youth in Chimacum. Jefferson County Public Health http://www.jeffersoncountypublichealth.org/index.php?c-p-c Denise Banker 360-385-9438 dbanker@co.jefferson.wa.us only for the planning process that the coalition will be starting. Please Note: this HYS data is from the fall of 2014. The HYS data from the fall of 2016 will be released next spring, hopefully in early March. This should allow enough time for the coalition to adjust the strategic plan should there be new data. She mentioned this it might be wise for the coalition to anticipate that youth marijuana use might be up since marijuana has been legalized after the 2014 HYS. Kelly also mentioned to the group that there will be an election for the Executive Committee positions in October and asked that members consider running for office, especially since Whitney Meissner has let the coalition know that she will be stepping down as the coalition chair. The group had a discussion and expressed concern about the local marijuana retail outlets, and also the advertising and layout of the convenience / gas store at the first intersection to Chimacum. Kelly mentioned that in the past one of the coalition’s environmental strategies was to have the CHS Prevention Club students do a Community Assessment of Neighborhood Stores (CANS). She mentioned that considering the new marijuana retail outlets and the change in advertising and layout of the convenience / gas store, that might be an interesting environmental strategy to repeat. August 10th is Kelly’s birthday. To celebrate turning 65, she brought a cake to share with coalition members. Adjournment: The group disbanded at approximately 4:55 pm. Next meeting will be September 14, 2016 at CHS Library Handouts: 8-10-16 Agenda Draft 7-13-16 Meeting Minutes Coalition Member Notebooks
