November 9, 2016

Chimacum High School Library
Purpose of the meeting: Presentation: Idolina Cervantes, Prevention Club Senior; Appoint new
Executive Committee; Approve Environmental Policy; Report on Nextdoor.com; SFP February &
March; Townhall events, April; Strategic planning groups.

Present: Bob Wicks, Ciela Meyer, Lindsey Kellum, Teresa, Kris Becker (Jumping Mouse Exec.

4:05 Denise
Call meeting to order; minutes and agenda approved (Bob
and Ciela). Talked about recruiting more people/members.
Denise will contact Whitney and Brian (CHS) personally to
invite their participation.
Denise has ideas for recruiting more members. Once we have
more members, we will select an Executive Committee.
Denise will be doing a workshop on writing at Jefferson Co.
Library to help rally students around Drug Free activities and
to recruit for the Prevention Club.

Silvia has been working hard on getting the survey link out for
people in the community to fill them out. Silvia is working on
finding the owner of Bill’s Garage to see about putting up
Drug Free signs. Denise has researched how to put up a
banner across the highway

Presentation by Ms. Idolina Cervantes – moved to Dec. She
is a senior this year, her project is making a video about how
substance abuse has affected people. She went to the
national drug free convention in Seattle last year.
Ciela talked about program her / school outcomes last year:
40% cigarette reduction
70% alcohol reduction
67% binge drinking reduction
75% marijuana reduction
Students who failed classes was cut in half from last year.
Ciela will make this report available once she has permission.

Update on Environmental Policy. Share handout of policy with
Green Card language added. Edits: strike specific mention of
ESD. Change the long paragraph on I-502 to something like:
“In keeping with Washington State Public School policy and
Federal Law, the CSD policy is to not permit anyone
(employee, student or any other person) to possess
marijuana on campus or a school event, even if he or she has
a medical marijuana card.”
Next meeting we will approve the edits and then forward to
School Board—Schedule date on its Calendar.

Ways to advertise the survey: Report on Nextdoor.com. Need
to use a Chimacum address.
Also posting on CHS Band Facebook site, and becoming part
of the “Hub” on the CSD website.

Strengthening Families Program scheduled for Feb 2- Mar 16,
6-8 pm, 12 Family limit. Looking for a spot to meet with a
kitchen. Need a reoccurring event permit from Health Dept.

Report on grant funds for Townhall Speakers. Tanya has
extra funds we could use. Ask Linda Chamberlain (from AK),
speaks on trauma and resiliency, mind - body connection, and
adolescent brain (will be in the area).
Show film “Paper Tigers” and find someone associated with it
to talk before the film and show it at the Rose Theater (Robert
Redford’s son?). Retired superintendent from Walla Walla has
a new book out. There is also a follow up event, “Resiliency.”

Make sure we have plenty of lead time and advertise to get
people to come out. (Remember, you have to see something
3 times before you even begin to see it.) We could use a
banner across the highway to advertise. Do one big event
rather than several small events. Have a panel
