Call meeting to order. Minutes approved (Ciela & Lindsey).
Corrective Action Plan (CAP) report: Explained to DBHR
(funder) planning for Parenting Wisely (PW) & Strengthening
Families program (SFP), which the Coalition has struggled to
populate. Denise pitched program to juvenile services, Dove
House... Theresa signed up 12 more people for online PW,
which is a beneficial program, but is time-consuming, doesn’t
fit the Chimacum demographic, and tedious to complete; don’t
try to do it in one sitting. In the CAP, Denise proposed one
additional SFP in the spring and that PW be discontinued with
its budgeted funds reallocated to speakers, or in-person
services. Denise will move the funds to speakers.
4:20
Strengthening Family sessions (2 Feb-16 March), promoting

CES & CMS (Barga, Carthum), send flyer home with kids.
Supper is provided to participants prior to parent / youth and
family sessions. Program builds mutual empathy, skills.
Cynthia Koan, SFP facilitator made a strong pitch for the
program. Need to schedule another series to make up for the
missed on in October.
4:30
Looking at revisions to school substance abuse policy.
Suggestions to revise the ungainly, repetitive legalese in the
first paragraph; Denise will work on that.
4:40
Sylvia found owner of vacant gas station, where the Coalition
wants to place positive messaging in the windows. Denise
collected sufficient surveys at CES & CMS parent
conferences. Denise went to her first CHS prevention club
meeting. Ciela wants to do something more visible in the
school perhaps a Community Assessment of Neighborhood
Stores (CANS). Students visit local retailer selling alcohol and
tobacco to do assessments that consider placement of these
controlled substances, advertising, etc. Lindsey went to
Kitsap with the Liquor & Cannabis Board, distributing
marijuana prevention pamphlets to businesses… prompted
reporting of a convenience store selling marijuana to youth.
Lyndsy will be accompanying the Liquor & Cannabis Board
inspectors when they inspect Jefferson County marijuana
retail shops soon.
4:50
New recruit: Chris Becker, executive director at Jumping
Mouse Children’s Center in PT (counseling, intervention
center serving children, ages 2-12, in East Jefferson County).
Denise continues recruitment activities. We need a robust
town hall event (Paper Tigers showing with guest speaker?)
to make a big splash. The strategic plan specifies 5 events,
but we may want to do 1 big one, and 4 key leader events,
which may include presenting to School Board, Board of
Health, Rotary, etc. Denise suggested the Prevention Club
members & the coalition walk with CHS band in the Rhody
parade. Denise became aware, as a result of collecting and
inputting hardcopy surveys, that few community members
know there is a volunteer coalition in their community

dedicated to youth alcohol and other drug prevention. Celeste
Bennett said kids at CHS were struggling with the election.
MacKenzie: has mostly died down. Bullying relatively mild,
efforts to combat it seem largely successful. Hard to be a
student of color in CHS. There is a new Gay Straight Alliance
(GSA) club in the school. Positive Dove House presentation
last night (12/13) at the Chimacum HS library. Integrate Dove
House message into Health class?
5:00
Next meeting, Dec.14. We will start meeting in the Jeff. Co.
Library in Jan. 2017. Adjourn.

members who she will introduce in February. Lisa Stewart, Division of Behavioral Health and
Recovery will do a Coalition Orientation meeting in March. We need to work on 2017 Media
Campaign action plan; 2017 Community Event: Paper Tigers; 2017 CANS project; Assign work
