Explain the Strategic Plan Revision Timeline and decide how
we want to approach each task: divide them and work through
in small groups during the next four meetings?
Denise suggested that we dedicate the monthly meetings for
completion of this task. It does not have to be re-written, just
revised as appropriate. For example, changes to programs
that have not been and will not be implemented. The
strategic plan is not intended to be a possible action plan but
an intentional action plan. Example is the program “Project
Toward No Drug Abuse” – a 12-session curriculum for High

School students. To get 12-sessions incorporated into a
school program is not very practical in view of all the existing
demands on the classrooms. There is also not the funding to
train someone to run the program, which is required for
compliance with EBP requirements. At issue is that we are
required to conduct 2 EBP. They don’t have to be curriculum
based EBP. Prior to Denise Banker assuming the
Coordinator role, DBHR on-site meeting re-allocated funding
for Protecting You/Protecting me to Media. There was
discussion about taking time to have an orientation about
what DBHR expects in the plan; what is working; and what
isn’t. Then we could go through with making changes. Eg
Strengthening Families has finally launched but with only 3
enthusiastic families (5 adults, 6 kids). The revised plan is
due to DBHR by June.

Report on Prevention Club activities, and ideas
Ciela and Denise participated with the kids in the National
Drug Facts Week event. The kids were a bit disappointed
that their questions weren’t addressed. It is hoped that the
event will be carried forward into next year. CANS –
Community Assessment of Neighborhood Stores. There is a
Tobacco Grant that will provide stipends for the students.
Ciela reported on the success of last year’s Kick Butts project.
Denise was approved to drive students to do CANS project.
Most pieces are in place for CANS, just setting a date. A
picture was taken for the Year Book too. There are currently
5 students involved in the Prevention Club. Denise reported
on the Tobacco & Marijuana Prevention Summit at NW ESD.

Report on, discussion of Paper Tigers Event early May with
PTFF
Things are progressing for this showing in partnership with
PTFF, a local non-profit. We have to make sure it doesn’t
conflict with the Rhododendron Festival in Port Townsend
which is the 3rd week of May. There was discussion of having
Paper Tigers as part of the Festival. Denise will talk to
Janette at PTFF about incorporating this into the
Rhododendron Festival. And, she’ll also talk about walking in
the parade.
4:45
Report on, discussion of expansion of social norms campaign
Denise reported on Sylvia’s efforts on using the Gas Station
for hanging signs. She has not heard back from the property

owner. There was a suggestion that we include affirmation
postcards in grade reports using community survey and
healthy youth survey results. Reports cards just went out so
next time we could do this would be in early April. Ciela has
several activities planned for at School including posters; and
activities with prizes for students. Response from her
students to the “Listen to Your Selfie” was not positive last
year. Planning for more activities throughout the year. A
series of posters with a different statistic or issue could be
implemented. We need to recruit new members to the
prevention club.
4:55
Do we have enough committed members to elect new chair,
vice-chair, and secretary? Once we do this the website will be
updated.
Website revisions are dependent upon getting Officers
elected. There are also several new members in the works.
Recent feedback is that the site is pretty good, even if
somewhat out-dated.
5:00
Do we want to keep meeting here?
Next two meetings will be at the Library. Next meeting is
March 8th.
Close meeting
There was a fabulous article in the Jefferson County Leader
last week about the film tonight quoting Denise.
The March 8th meeting of the Chimacum Prevention Coalition will be held at the Jefferson
Community Library’ Shold Room from 4:00 – 5:00 PM.
If you or anyone you know wants to be involved in supporting students in their effort to avoid
alcohol and other drugs, please join us.
ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG PREVENTION IS GOOD WORK.
