HomeMy WebLinkAbout201509_SAAB_0908_Minutes1 APPROVED December 8th, 2015 JEFFERSON COUNTY SUBSTANCE ABUSE ADVISORY BOARD Tuesday September 8th, 2015 3:30 – 5:00 PM Jefferson County Courthouse Commissioners Chambers Basement Level Meeting Minutes Board Members Present: Catharine Robinson, Kathleen Kler, Dave Stanko, Anne Dean, Mike Evans Board Members Absent: Kenneth Frohning, Adam Marquis, and Anthonie Cullen Staff Present: Teresa Wirth, Ford Kessler, Julia Danskin Staff Absent: Kelly Matlock, Vince Marquis Guests: Steve Workman I. Approval of Agenda – Added Drug Take Back Day and Jail needs- Kathleen Kler/ Anne Dean /All II. Introductions – None III. Approval of the August, 2015 minutes –Mike Evans/Dave Stanko /All IV. Public Comments/From the Floor/Announcements – Steve Workman inquired as to whether there has been any consideration for Jefferson County to pursue any grant funding to train and equip First Responders with naloxone, a drug that reverses opiate overdoses. The Department of Public Health is looking into this and Ford stated some aid cars are currently using Naloxone. Sheriff Stanko stated his deputies are not currently carrying Naloxone with them. Steve informed Sheriff Stanko that deputies in Clallam County are currently carrying Naloxone. Sheriff Stanko stated he would contact the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department to get information. V. Provider Reports Prevention Kelly Chimacum Prevention Coalition (CPC) Activities  The Chimacum Prevention Coalition, Jefferson County Public Health and OESD114 sponsored a Youth Mental Health First Aid training on Monday, August 24, 2015. The 8 hour training was well attended and very well received. Julia Danskin and Kelly Matlock are in the process of planning another training for October 2015. This is tentative due to funding issues. There is a waiting list from the first training, and those who took the first training are referring others. More information will be shared if and when this second training develops.  The next Strengthening Families sessions will begin in October, 2015. Registration will begin in September, 2015. Please contact Julia at jdanskin@co.jefferson.wa.us or Kelly at kmatlock@co.jefferson.wa.us with possible referrals. (See attached flyer)  CPC will be conducting its annual Community Survey and Coalition Member Survey starting on September. The link for the survey will be emailed to the SAAB list serve. 2 APPROVED December 8th, 2015  FYI – the National Prevention Network will be held in Seattle this November, 2015. (See attached “Save The Date” flyer)  The next Chimacum Prevention Coalition meeting is tomorrow. The specifics are: When: Wednesday, September 9, 2015 4:00 to 5:00 pm Where: The Chimacum High School Library. ALL SAAB MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY AND ALL CHIMACUM PREVENTION COALITION (CPC) EVENTS OR ACTIVITIES. Public Health Julia Julia reported Anna McEnery is presenting a resolution to the County Commissioners called “"Stepping Up: A National Initiative to Reduce the Number of People with Mental Illnesses in Jails." With support from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance and guidance from several national groups dedicated to these issues, counties across the country are joining a call to action and taking specific, research- driven actions to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in county jails. County Drug & Alcohol Coordinator Ford Ford reported Safe Harbor has hired a new Chemical Dependency Professional in order to keep up with the demand for CD services. Safe Harbor will be starting an afternoon Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Currently Safe Harbor has a Youth IOP group, an AM and PM IOP group, and a Codit IOP group. Now that Adam Marquis is back from vacation Ford is scheduling meetings with him to continue working on the merger. Believe in Recovery Vince No Report Mental Health Adam No Report VI. BHO Advisory Recruitment Applications are due by September 18th, 2015. Catharine Robinson, Anne Dean and Anthonie Cullen have applied to positions on the Jefferson County Advisory Board. Sheriff Stanko will be asking Captain Mike Stringer to apply for the advisory board. VII. New Business Members had a discussion about the DEA “Drug Take Back” day scheduled for September 26th, 2015. Members decided it was too close to the event to organization a group to participate locally. Members were reminded the public can take medications (in a baggie, not their containers) to the Sheriff’s department for disposal Monday through Friday 9:00 – 5:00. Sheriff Stanko reported the jail has several positions open. RP Screening/Liaison- Individual needed to do screening of inmates for participation in the Relapse Prevention education group, referrals and act as liaison when inmates are released. Cook position at Jefferson County jail- permanent part time (approx. 69 hours per month) week end position.
