Increase in Chlamydia Cases Reported in Jefferson County
11/15/2013
Dear Jefferson County Healthcare Providers,
This is an update for you about the increase in chlamydia being reported in Jefferson County. Sixty three
chlamydia cases have been reported in January - October, 2013, more than in any other year. The
previous peak years were: 2003, 59 cases; 2005, 57 cases; 2010, 58 cases, for the entire 12 month
period. In other years, between 30 and 50 cases were reported.
View the attached tables for details about diagnosing clinics, age, and gender. Of the 63 cases, 18 were
diagnosed at Jefferson Healthcare clinics (15 female, 3 male) and 30 were diagnosed at JCPH (25 female,
5 male).
Remember all recommendations for screening and treatment:
CDC recommends annual screening of all sexually active women aged < 26 years and screening
of older women with risk factors (e.g., those who have a new sex partner or multiple sex
partners).
CDC states all chlamydia-infected women and men should be retested 3 months after treatment,
regardless of whether they believe their sex partners were treated (testing for reexposure).
Expedited Partner Treatment (EPT) is available at Safeway and JCPH for treatment of all
partners. There is no charge for this medication. All sexual contacts with in the 60 days
preceding diagnosis require treatment. The prescription form for EPT medication is on page 3 of
the STD Case Report Form, available on our web page: www.jeffersoncountypublichealth.org/ .
Go to the Information for Healthcare Providers page.
Because some patients need help ensuring their partners’ treatment, health department staff
would like to speak with patients with any of the following risk factors:
1) All persons who report having more than one sex partner in the last 60 days
2) Persons with a partner they do not think they will have sex with again
3) Men who have sex with men
Thank you for all of your efforts in screening for, diagnosing and treating this disease. Please call 385-
9400 if you have any questions and fax case reports to 385-9401.
Sincerely,
Lisa McKenzie, PHN, MPH
Communicable Disease Program Coordinator
