Re: Bridge Closure
Please note that there is a multi-chamber meeting with WA-DOT regarding the
Bridge closure, emergency services, and other matter, on March 19, 2009 at the
Inn at Port Hadlock.
Commissioner’s Update – John Austin
BOCC is reviewing the way that it vets people who apply for different boards and
commissions. By the next meeting, all open positions on the TCC should be filled
and confirmed.
State Parks have been asked to close about 14 parks because of expenses and
maybe will have to close up to 28 parks. John stated that he testified to the State
Parks Commission to try to encourage them to use the Montana method of Opt-
Out. When people renew their car tabs, they can check off that they do not want
to contribute $4-5 to the state parks. If renewing drivers don’t check off the box,
their renewal cost is automatically that amount more. This Opt-Out system would
supply enough money to save the parks. Several years ago, the admissions for
day use fees to state parks was dropped and there was no way to replace that
income for the parks. This Opt-Out way of raising revenue does not require a
vote by the people because it is truly a donation.
Hotel-Motel Lodging Tax: We are only slightly behind Feb 2008 income.
Continuing Business
Bike Map – Bill
Mike McKennah would like to come back to us maybe next year. They already
have enough money from Clallam County and still have enough stock for
Jefferson County, if that stock lasts until next year. Bill stated that people come to
Gateway Visitor’s Center and ask specifically for this map. Joy suggested that
may GPS would be able to help fund the map.
Lodging Insert for Travel Planner – Christina
We are trying to collect all changes to include in the next printing for Jefferson
County/Port Townsend, with an April 1 deadline. Gateway VC will be the clearing
house for changes.
Getaway Guide – Christina
Pt-LTAC passed Scott Wilson’s Getaway Guide. Rod did inventory and found an
additional 4300 Travel Planners.
Travel Planner Fulfillment – Christina
Rod has a proposal to have Port Townsend Chamber do fulfillment for Travel
Planners, instead of fulfilling in Sequim. David Timmons would like to do all
fulfillment on DVD so the Travel Planner is in a readable book format. If the
County has a book to add on to that, it can be included as well. If the person who
is asking for information and wants the paper copy, David Timmons would like to
have it set up on the PT website to charge $2 for mailing. Continued to next
meeting for further discussion.
Spring Campaign – Debbie Black
Ad space has been reversed. First ad has already run. Did have a few responses
from restaurants. We will be running ads with Seattle Dining for three more
months: April, May and June. Let Debbie Black know if you have something to
include. Theme is “All Things Spring.”
Journal Newspaper ad will appear in May with an article attached.
Two Junkets:
First is Shawn McLain this weekend with will be visiting the West
End. Will be also recording some audio while here.
KMPS Junket – April 3 & 4. There is a change from Stubbs to the Morning
Personality Steven Kilbreath, who is originally from Port Angeles. Steve’s wife
happens to be a “Twilight” fan. This junket will be for two nights, one at Quilleyute
Ocean Side Resort in LaPush. Will do podcast and send to his tech crew via You
Tube for first week in April.
KING Radio ad begins the week of April 5 and we will also be running a contest
with KING_FM where listeners will text in their best memories of time on the
Olympic Peninsula. At the end of the contest, KING-FM will select a winner who
will receive a grant prize with two nights stay in Port Ludlow with golf and dinner.
That will run every other week through April and May and first two weeks of June.
KMPS will run live endorsements the week of April 5 and then they will be doing
a coordinated drive throughout the campaign.
Texting contest is the third week of April, with more live endorsements and on-air
spots in June.
Port Hadlock has contributes seven overnight packages and the seven night
package for the e-blast.
We need five overnight packages from Jefferson County venues. We also have
the opportunity to do one more week of giveaways.
There is also a special package through the texting campaign and through email
blast that would cue listeners to go to the website. Will have an icon to click that
takes you to a page where you need to enter your contact information, then get a
password to allow entrance to a page where you can view packages and
coupons, which will be good for tracking. These packages should be special and
not available to the general public. Joy has packages for meals and lodgings and
will call those to Debbie.
KMPS Giveaways are due April 1 and can all be different lodgings. Certificates
are due April 3. Debbie Black needs the certificates the Friday before the on-air
endorsements.
Incentive Package
– can be discounts from any lodgings and restaurants. Joy is
working on the excursion for KING.
Seattle Dining – any restaurants who are running specials for the month of April
can be included, copy required by the last week of March.
Next Meeting will be at Anna Matschke’s Hard Rain Café at 9:00 am on April
10, 2009, followed by a raft trip and FAM Tour.
Address for Hard Rain Café: 5763 Upper Hoh Road
ACTION ITEM: Christina will bring cost breakdowns to the next meeting so
we can have a vote on fulfillment for travel planners.
Sunset Magazine will be featuring this area in June Issue, “From Farm to Fork”
about food.
Overarching Marketing message for this area has been determined as “Life on
the Other Side . . . “ Christina is putting that out to bid for graphics. Each venue
can add their own creative wording to describe their lodgings.
Southern Strategy – Christina
Washington DOT has agreed to have a “Twilight Ferry” specifically for moving
goods on/off the Olympic Peninsula, but will take passenger cars and foot traffic.
DOT has put together a new schedule. Sun-Thurs the Twilight Ferry will leave
Edmonds and arrive in PT about 10:20 pm, then will reload and return to
Edmonds. PT will provide concierge service to meet the ferry and direct people
to lodgings that are open in PT & Jefferson County. There is no commitment for
ferry service yet for Friday and Saturday nights. Washington DOT will now reprint
their maps to include this ferry service. Also, coming into PT will be a sign saying
that there is concierge service.
Kenmore Air will have a flight to Seattle for $79 each way.
Southern Strategy – Diane
The request that Christina brought to the table at the Tourism Commission to do
an insert of a special tri-fold piece will be included in selected newspapers south
of the Peninsula for mid-April: Oregonian, Olympian, East County Journal
(Chehalis & Centralia),Vancouver Columbian.
John and Larry left at 11:00 am.
Tourism Commission – Diane
The Tourism Commission hired the web team Freelock to build the
visitolympicpeninsula.com website.
Tourism Day in Olympia

and Kevin Van de Wege. Christina went in Victorian costume. There was a
reception at the Governor’s Mansion.
