Commissioner’s Update – John Austin
Status of the County Budget is undetermined until after negotiations with unions.
Proposition 1 passed so Sheriff’s, Community Center, Community Nurse, etc, are
saved, and with the co-op with the City of Port Townsend, Memorial Field will be
saved.
John felt it would be a good idea to list the museum at Camp Parsons (the oldest Boy
Scout camp in the nation) in the listings of museums. Discussion.
John passed out the current graph and stat sheet of the Hotel-Motel Lodging Tax. In
Jefferson County among the financial statistics for the county: REET, Sales Tax, Cash
on Hand; the Hotel Motel Tax is doing relatively well.

Six Best Winter Hikes: Bill
Diane requested information re: low elevation hikes and would like to have a
brochure of very simple hikes. Joy has some maps from the Forest Service for their
area that are already printed. Christina will provide some hikes for Port Townsend
by early December. Bill asked if this was a good idea (if these were designed in a
simple manner so they can be copied easily, etc.) Discussion. Joy will get copies of
South County maps to Bill. Miriam will have Larry Scott from Port Ludlow call Bill
re: the trails there.

OPTC – Diane
At the OPTC Meeting last week, Freelock made a presentation about web hits and
how to make our website a little more “sticky.” Lodgings and “things to do” are
where most people go to on that website and are considering a little more of a
navigation bar.
Diane has brought Culinary rack cards, also has dental floss, window clings and
buttons.
Web design contract: have released the design contractor and are starting over,
have lost two months.
The State Tourism Office is going to change. They are considering a 501C6, which is
a trade organization and are looking at how to fund that. They are asking for input
across all sectors and how to do that fairly. Discussion. There is no state LTAC
collection to support that office.
Tourism Day: January 18
Diane is working on an annual report for OPTC and what has been accomplished.
The next OPTC meeting will be on December 2 at 11:00 am in Sequim.
PT LTAC—Christina
The inaugural sailing of the new M/V Chetzemoka will be this Sunday, Nov. 14th.
We’re expecting 750-1000 people. It’s a busy time of organizing all the details!
The ferry is taller than the Klickitat so it gives you a higher perspective of Port
Townsend from the deck. The top two levels contain the seating. Bicycles can be
stored on the second level. There will be a galley on board and apparently WSF has
put in an application for a liquor license.
Port Townsend City Council commissioned a painting by Max Grover to be
presented to Pierce County as a thank you for use of the Steilacoom II. It will be
presented during the inaugural sailing.
The City of PT, Port of Port Townsend and Jefferson County (with the County
Commissioners and County Administrator paying for the County’s portion with their
own monies) will have an ad in the PDN on Friday, in the Leader next Wednesday,
and in the Whidbey Examiner tomorrow. This is an ad thanking WSF, the State
Legislature, Pierce County, the S’Klallam/Klallam tribes, JCHS, Blue Heron Middle
School and the citizens on both sides of Admiralty Inlet for the new ferry.
A holiday promotion will run on KING FM, encouraging visitors to come to both Port
Townsend and Coupeville for holiday activities, while riding the new Chetzemoka.
There was a PR workshop hosted by Edelman, WA State Tourism’s PR firm, in
October. Christina, Mary Brelsford (communications manager for OPVB) and
Barbara Hanna (Sequim marketing director) attended. With State budget cuts that
Diane mentioned at OPTC last week, they are trying to figure out how to most cost-
effectively promote the State in 2011. The new campaign will be called, “Share YOUR
Washington” and will be fashioned from a similar campaign run by Florida last year.
Christina will send her notes from the meeting to Kitti and she will forward them to
the group.
Northwest Backroads ran a nice piece on Finnriver Farm.
New Business
Allison asked if there was any chance we could entice the Chimacum High School
video students to do a video for You Tube to advertise Jefferson County? It was also
noted that Pamela Roberts, 4H leader for Jefferson County, has a crew that produces
videos too.
Jennifer announced that there is a meeting Friday regarding branding Jefferson
County. PortHadlock.org and PortHadlockChamber.org will be replaced with a new
tourism Website. This meeting will be from 1-3:00 pm at the Port Hadlock Library.
Keven Elliff will facilitate the meeting. This project will be going on for the next 2-2
½ months.
Diane moved to adjourn the meeting at 11:40 a.m.
