PT LTAC – Christina Pivarnik
Port Townsend is re-doing EnjoyPT.com and while simultaneously
developing the Wayfinding Project. It’s anticipated the new website will be
deployed in June or July. It will include new videos of one minute sound bites
featuring various themes around Port Townsend, including history, culture,
maritime, etc. Christina announced that there would be a workshop on April
20 in the Cotton Building about the Wayfinding Project and that would be a
good time to hear what is going on with it.
Part of the Wayfinding Project will be the launch a Civic District celebration
throughout the month of May, which includes festival-style activities every
weekend. There are posters up around town and banners in the Civic District
area.
There is a PT LTAC meeting today and the members will look at joining the
Washington Tourism Alliance. PT is hoping the Salish Ferry is in operation
before July 4 weekend, but at the very least, it should be running by mid-July.
Port Townsend couldn’t be more excited to have two ferries on the route
again!
Teresa Verraes reported that she and her staff had finished collating the
visitor counts for two years at Port Townsend Visitor Info Center and will
send to Kitti for distribution.
Commissioner’s Update – John Austin
John spoke to Norm Dicks while he was in Washington, DC, about the Dose River
Road repairs, and stated that Rep. Dicks is “enthusiastic” about the road. John has
sent contact information for the US Forest Service and Western Division of
Department of Highways. The Park has already set aside $750,000 for their part of
the road repair. John also spoke to Patty Murry, Maria Cantwell, and more.
BOCC will do a series of meetings with local communities in the county, starting
with Cape George this Thursday at the Cape George Fire Hall at 7:00 pm followed by
Brinnon on the 27, Toandos Peninsula and Coyle on May 4, and the West End
th
probably in June (maybe at the Hoh Tribal Center), all starting at 7:00 pm.
Terry Hakala, on the sewer system at Brinnon and Dosewallips State Park, expects
to start the system in two years but there isn’t enough money, yet. Will start the
collection system, but are worried they won’t be able to collect enough money for
the treatment center. Joe Baisch stated that there was already pipe in the ground.
Lodging (LTAC) Income for March, 2011, is the best for all the years between 2004-
2011, though General Sales Tax for the same period is down compared to March of
other years. Bill stated the numbers at Gateway VC are also definitely up in March.
Joe Baisch stated that he has been appointed by the BOCC to the Work Force Council,
and that a new company is relocating to Jefferson County that makes wheel chairs,
and also a composite company will relocate here. Joe also stated that Bonnie Story is
a professional website designer who says that olympicpeninsula.org website is a
great website and that Freelock did a great job designing that for us.
BOCC is going to try to get an assessment on the Brinnon Motel from a neutral third
part about what to do with it. BOCC wants to make sure that we can support a
Community Center in Brinnon. John felt the Brinnon Motel would not be able to be
opened this season.
OPTC – Diane
Diane, Christina, and a half-dozen other people went to Olympia to hear the plan for
the Washington Tourism Alliance. It is a membership organization, 501c6, looking
for support. There was great support from Oregon and Alaska re: how those
organizations were born and how they flourished. This Alliance Board has filed
papers and set up a skeleton organization and now needs people to flesh out that
skeleton. OPTC voted at the last meeting to support the Alliance with a $5,000 initial
membership contribution.
Jane Kilburn is coming on April 25. Diane will co-present an OPTC report. This gets
us a kind of charter membership and our logo on the website. We will request a
place on the Board.
At the OPTC meeting, Diane talked a little bit about Victoria program. Bill Eisenhour
is requesting that we work with a company called Trapeze to target market there.
We will possibly do a trade show in a sporting goods store there. Will take some
Park Rangers, lodgings and resort staff, maybe in late May or beginning of July.
Travel Writers are beginning to arrive. One from Pennsylvania, Sue Fast from Island
Parent, is doing an article for parents, and another writer is doing an article for
parents with twins. It is beginning to be travel writer season.
Culinary: This month’s Board meeting will be Tuesday at 9:30 with lunch at 1:30 at
Fort Worden. There will be various speakers and a tour of Finn River Farm after the
meeting. There will also be a reception at Port Ludlow, 6:30-8:30, which requires a
RSVP, though it is complementary.
Waterfall Trail: Mason County did not participate in the brochure. We are waiting
before we publish another brochure to see if Diane can travel to see the two
waterfalls in Mason County.
Christina stated that the Travel Writers conference will be Sunday, May 1 and will
conclude at end of day on Monday, May 2.
Concierge Fam Tour: Discussion about having a FAM tour. Christina will coordinate
but needs feedback to make it happen. Diane, Barbara, Christina will work on this.
Joy just found out Evergeen Escapes has just done a FAM tour.
Spring Campaign – Diane for Debbie Black
Debbie will not make a verbal report today but has submitted a written report in the
meeting packet.
Activity Map – Bill
Bill passed out a draft copy of the Activity Map for members to view. Bill and Kitti
have reviewed the lodging list in the draft of the Activity Map reprint again and it
appears to be in order. We hope to have the Printery print the map. They gave us the
best price.
We placed the lodging list in the Getaway Guide and Bill passed out a copy of the ad
that will run with the Lodging List. Discussion about the change in printing schedule
for the Getaway Guide. Last year, it was printed once. This year it will be printed
twice.
Bike Map – Bill
There is an application filled out by David McCulloch requesting a grant from TCC to
help reprint the Bike Map. Bill asked if we could give $1,000, which would give us
30,000 copies. Bill thinks this is a great piece. Diane stated that this same group has
approached Clallam County to help fund the sister map to this, which Clallam County
has done. Joy stated that North Hood Canal has provided $750 for the technical
changes for this map.
Diane moved to approve this grant. Discussion about in which category this money
might be able to be found. Diane revised the motion to include approving the grant
and to determine from which categories the money will come later. Chuck seconded.
Motion passed unanimously.
New Business
LTAC – Joy
We will have a little more LTAC Income coming in because this is the last year for
the Balloon Hanger payment. Bill stated that we will also have to pay for the
destroyed Port-a-potties. Goodman will waive the costs if Gateway puts in a
surveillance system, and right now, Bill feels that is a good thing to do.
The next meeting will be May 10, 2011, at 10:00 am at Brinnon (probably at
Elk Meadows B&B). The venue will be announced later.
Miriam announced that she is retiring from the Resort at Port Ludlow to work in her
family business. We were all sad to hear that Miriam is leaving!!!
Diane moved to adjourn at 11:52 am.
