SUMMARY: Provides technical support for all environmental health programs including Food Safety,
On-site Sewage, Solid/Hazardous Waste, Zoonotic Disease, Living Environment and Drinking Water
programs by performing a wide variety of activities necessary to assist with program administration
including filing, database entry, correspondence, developing internal protocols and procedures for
paperwork flows by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Other duties may be assigned.
Responds to all inquiries regarding on-site sewage systems, food safety, drinking water and solid
hazardous waste from e-mail, telephone calls, and in-person encounters.
Provides technical support to all Environmental Health Specialists in all program areas. Uses knowledge
of various programs to insure departmental software processes are well coordinated and uses knowledge
to effectively work with customers on program problems and inquires.
Assists Environmental Health Specialists with the "in office" review of plans and/or permits related to on-
site sewage system design and installation.
Assists Environmental Health Specialists with the development of program related educational materials
and conducting of public meetings and/or educational events.
Performs literature and file reviews, and inputs data into the environmental health database to assess
trends in pollution levels affecting public health.
Assists with the administration of Federal, State and local contracts and grants.
Creates and maintains files for a number of administrative processes including, but not limited to,
permits. Files permits according to a prescribed breakdown and is responsible for upkeep of files and
moving old files to records and new categories. Creates new files, tables, and changes fees, and other
applicable categories of relational data necessary to update permit plan software.
Accurately transcribes data from applications and reports into electronic and typewritten data files
Maintains a high standard of quality in all work.

Maintains, audits, and proofs records, distributes permits as issued. Using standard procedures,
independently follows up on applications and other materials requiring action on a prescribed basis until
eventually resolved; maintains record keeping systems to do so.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill,

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associates Degree (A.A. or A.A.S.) in natural sciences or environmental technology and one (\)
year of experience working in a private or public sector in environmental, health, natural
resources, ecology or related environmental health position; OR 3 years of experience working in
a public sector environmental, health, natural resources, engineering, ecology or related field; or
equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in public health or for a
public health related agency preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general environmental health periodicals, professional
journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, professional
correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to
questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, and
geometry. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as determining spatial distances.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to
interpret an extensive array of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal
with several abstract and concrete variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Word, word processing
software; MS Excel, spreadsheet software; MS Access, database software; Internet Explorer,
internet software; Outlook, E-mail software; and GIS software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Washington State Driver's License
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Self -motivated to complete required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks. Proficiency
in handling multiple, unexpected interruptions on an ongoing basis which pertain to the ability to create
time for necessary tasks.
Ability to use standard office machines such as computer, photocopier, and calculator. Proficient typing
key boarding skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, staff, and the general
public, to work in within the team, and to creative problem solve with others.
Ability to grasp new techniques and deal with rapid changes in events. Willingness to effectively utilize
continuing education opportunities and to stay abreast of new developments, techniques, computer

programs, equipment, etc., used in the performance of the position. Learn and understand standard
policies and procedures of a variety of departments.

Acquire basic knowledge to read legal documentation, plat maps, survey records, and other technical
maps.
