Employee Recognition - Paul Walters, Roads Superintendent
Statement of Issue: Paul Walters, Roads Superintendent for the Department of Public Works,
is about to retire after 37 years of outstanding public service. A short recognition ceremony
and photo op will be held.
Analysis/Strategic Goals/Pro's £t Con's: The County can only deliver essential services to the
Public through its dedicated employees. Paul Walters worked tirelessly for 37 years, first as
the Parks employee, but for most of his career in County Roads. Through experience and a
willingness to take on whatever task was handed to him, he became the supervisor
responsible for the maintenance and operations of county roadways. Never one to shy away
from duty, he answered his phone on any day and at any time to solve problems that arose,
more often than not on a weekend in the middle of the night when it decided to snow, or
flood, or blow trees down across the roads. Paul has always taken a lot of pride in his work
and in making sure that people could get down the road to their homes, jobs, or to school on
the bus in the morning. The County was fortunate to have Paul here for so long working at
this job and is losing a valuable employee and much of the institutional knowledge gained
over 37 years of service. Paul can tell you about the history of just about any road or culvert
in the county and knows or has at least talked to thousands of people in this county. Paul
played a key role in hiring and training his replacement to make sure that the Roads program
is left in good hands.
Fiscal Impact/Cost Benefit Analysis: Public Works staff paid for a recognition plaque which
will be presented to Mr. Walters by the Board of County Commissioners.
Recommendation: Please take this opportunity to recognize a dedicated employee, Paul
Walters, who is about to retire after 37 years of service and wish him well in his new
endeavors.
