SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming the Week of October 2, 2017 as
Mental Illness Awareness Week
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Darlene Grunke, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) requested approval of the proclamation
proclaiming the Week of October 2, 2017 as Mental Health Awareness Week.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming the Week of October 2, 2017 as Mental Illness Awareness Week.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, one in Five Americans will be affected by mental illness that will
create a disruption in their life, and the life of their family; and
WHEREAS, undiagnosed mental illness can lead to suicide, incarceration,
substance abuse and other harmful consequences; and
WHEREAS, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and a Presidential
Proclamation recognizes the week of October 2, 2017 as Mental Illness Awareness Week; and
WHEREAS, Mental Illness Awareness Week seeks to increase people's
understanding of the devastating impact of mental illness on the lives of individuals, their
families and friends, and seek to promote early diagnosis and treatment; and
WHEREAS, while there is no cure for mental illness, there are effective
treatment options that can help those with mental illness lead fulfilling lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BEITRESOLVED, the Jefferson County Board of
Commissioners on behalf of the citizens of Jefferson County, do hereby proclaim the week of
October 2, 2017 as:
MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK
And encourage all residents of Jefferson County to educate themselves about mental illness,
participate in educational activities and if necessary engage themselves or their families in a
successful treatment program.
