SUMMARY:
Performs apprentice -level mechanic responsibilities on the entire inventory of County vehicles
and equipment, including both gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines by performing the
following duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Persons in this position work under significant supervision from the fleet technician foreman as
well as informal oversight from higher-level fleet mechanics.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
No supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
Performs routine maintenance and servicing in the shop oil and filter changes, tire repairs and
related items.
Performs routine inspections of each vehicle and piece of equipment serviced, noting potential
maintenance problems, repair needs and safety concerns for follow-up by higher-level fleet
technicians.
In response to driver/operator reports and in response to problems noted during routine
inspections, performs minor diagnostics and repairs or assists in repairs of vehicle and non -road
equipment systems.
When releasing a vehicle or piece of equipment from the shop, ensures maintenance and repairs
have been completed fully, noted issues and driver/operator reports have been addressed and unit
can be driven or operated safely with no safety deficiencies.
Tracks time and materials in electronic fleet records systems.
Monitors and completes assigned supplemental tasks or programs necessary to keep the shop
operation working safely, legally and effectively. Tasks and programs may include such things

as shop cleanliness, inventory management, periodic shop and safety equipment inspections and
fuel -site monitoring and maintenance.
Performs shop maintenance and cleaning as required.
May be required to drive vehicles and operate heavy equipment.
Services and repairs small power tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED and one or more of the following:
Two-year automotive -technology or truck -technology degree or equivalent
certificate;
Two years' commercial experience in one of these skill families: auto, heavy
equipment, heavy truck, welding and fabricating; or tire/suspension repair;
or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as ordinances, safety rules,
equipment manuals, maintenance manuals, parts catalogs, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write detailed notes about repair and maintenance activities.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety
of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of personal -
computer operation and the use of e-mail and typical office software. The ability
to learn and to utilize unfamiliar software is essential, in order to make extensive
use of fleet -management database software and light use of diagnostic software.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Must be able to develop and maintain current technical skills.
Ability to comply with all County and departmental safety policies and procedures.

Experience performing routine maintenance activities; apprentice level knowledge of mechanical
equipment repair.
Must have proven ability to troubleshoot most equipment maintenance problems.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of application.
Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification and other required safety training and certifications
when provided by the employer.
May possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and the County may provide CDL training
for advancement to the next position in this career track.

lift) tires/wheels and other components weighing in excess of 200 pounds. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
CAREER LADDER/SKILL BAND POSITION:
This position is the first level of the Mechanic Skill Band.
