SUMMARY:
Performs master level mechanic responsibilities. May work on the entire inventory of County
vehicles and equipment, including both gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines by
performing the following duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Persons in this position work under supervision of the ER&R/Fleet Services Manager and the
Fleet Technician Foreman.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
No supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
Repairs and/or rebuilds of engines, transmissions, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Is required
to drive vehicles and operate heavy equipment.
Performs routine maintenance and/or servicing in the shop and the field, including diagnosis,
preventative maintenance, repairs and related items.
Performs routine inspections of each vehicle and piece of equipment services, noting potential
maintenance problems, repair needs and safety concerns for follow-up.
In response to driver/operator reports and in response to problems noted during routine
inspections, performs diagnostics and repairs or assists in repairs of vehicles and non -road
equipment systems.
When releasing a vehicle or piece of equipment from the shop, ensures maintenance and repairs
have been completed fully, noted issues and driver/operator reports have been addressed and unit
can be driven or operated safely with no safety deficiencies.

Researches complex problems and provides other mechanics with technical support for difficult
maintenance issues. Identifies best maintenance practices for fleet maintenance.
Assesses the in-house versus contracted costs for various maintenance projects.
Tracks time and materials in electronic fleet records systems.
Performs welding and fabricating; services and/or repairs small power tools.
Monitors and completes assigned supplemental tasks or programs necessary to keep the shop
operation working safely, legally and effectively. Tasks and programs may include such things
as shop cleanliness, inventory management, periodic shop and safety equipment inspections and
fuel -site monitoring maintenance.
May be required to determine project priority when emergency repairs are needed.
May provide technical and project oversight to Mechanic I and/or Mechanic II positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED plus seven (7) years' experience in mechanical
work in at least two (2) of the skill families - auto, heavy equipment, over the road
truck, welding and fabricating; or two (2) years of mechanical work experience in
two of the skills families listed and five (5) years combined experience in County
Mechanic I and/or II positions; or equivalent combination of education and
expenence.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as ordinances, safety rules,
equipment manuals, maintenance manuals, parts catalogs, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute and use rates,
percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety
of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of
personal computer operation and the use of e-mail and typical office software.
The ability to learn and to utilize unfamiliar software is essential in order to make

extensive use of fleet -management database software and light use of diagnostic
software.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
This position requires that the individual perform his/her duties with significant discretion and
with little supervision or technical assistance.
Must be able to develop and maintain current technical skills.
Ability to comply with all County and departmental safety policies and procedures.
Experience performing regular maintenance activities; master level of knowledge in at least one
field and journeyman level knowledge in all other areas of mechanical equipment repair.
Must have proven ability to troubleshoot most equipment maintenance problems.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license at the time of application.
Must obtain a Commercial endorsement (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification and other required safety training and certifications
when provided by the employer.
