Prevention Kelly
KPTZ Panel Presentation
The taping for the second Panel Presentation on the legal implications for youth and
adults in terms of underage drinking and drugging has been scheduled for Wednesday,
March 27th. The Panel will be Barb Carr with Juvenile Services, Scott Charlton with the
Public Defender’s Office and Steve Williams with State Farm Insurance. Proposed dates
and times have been sent to the panel presenters. SAAB Board Members, Port
Townsend Coalition and Jefferson County Community Network Board Members will be
notified as to the dates and times the program will be aired.
Protecting You / Protecting Me and Life Skills Training
Last year with the Communities that Care planning process, the evidence-based
prevention programs that were determined to be the best fit for Jefferson County were
Protecting You/ Protecting Me and Life Skills Training and these programs were included
in the Strategic Plan.
Protecting You/Protecting Me will be facilitated in the 5th grade in Chimacum by Kelly
Greenspane and in the Port Townsend 5th grade by Garin Williams and Mike Evans.
Greg Peterson will be facilitating the 1st through 4th grade PY/PM at Grant Street and
Blue Heron schools.
Life Skills Training is currently being presented to all 6th,7th and 8th grade students by
Garin Williams and Mike Evans from the City of Port Townsend, Meghan DeWalt with

Jefferson Mental Health and Anne Dean with PTC and JCCN. By all reports (students,
Blue Heron Staff, parents and facilitators) the classes are going very well.
In the wake of Initiative 1183 and Initiative 502
With the passing of Initiative 502 (marijuana initiative) there are a number of groups that
are requesting input into the regulations that will be developed around the law. Also the
Liquor Control Board is looking into the unintended consequences of Initiative 1183
(privatization of liquor) and are requesting input about liquor sales. If you are interested
in participating in this process, contact Washington Association for Substance Abuse and

Community Survey
Kelly passed out information on a community survey done in Jefferson County and a
state-wide comparison.

County Drug and Alcohol Coordinator Ford
Teresa announced SAAB members would be getting invitations to the upcoming Drug
Court graduation on March 21st via an email.
Teresa informed the group that John Taylor, Chief, Office of Behavioral Health and
Prevention has resigned his position effective April 1st, 2103.
Mental Health Sam
Mental Health Court is up and running. There are currently 2 potential clients with 2 more
in the screening process. Sam reported good cooperation with the courts on this project.
The school program is also up and running and is off to a good start.
JMH is working to meet the mental health needs of the community while dealing with
budget cuts. Sam is working on bringing in contracts to provide mental health services to
Tribal members in Jefferson County and is looking into developing an Autism program.
Youth Report Coleman/Garin
Garin informed the group he had a discussion with Coleman about substance use at P.T.
High School and stated he has not personally observed any evidence of drinking at the
school nor has he received any reports. He will continue to monitor the situation.
VI. Old Business
Jail Relapse Prevention program Fran
Fran reported no changes in the jail relapse program since the last report.
Teresa reported the women’s RP group is back up and running as of today.

Anne announced the date of the next Drug Take Back day will be April 27th, 2013.
Place to be determined.
VII. New Business
Fran asked Anne to complete review and editing of the Press Release she presented last
month and forward it to the Peninsula Daily News and The Leader.
Fran will contact Hargopal Boyd to obtain the Press Release for KPTZ so this project can
continue to move forward.
