Approval of Agenda – No Quorum Present II. Fran introduced Lois Barnett to the group as the newest SAAB member. It is anticipated she will be officially accepted on the board at the next Board of Health meeting (Thursday, August 15, 2013). III. Approval of the July, 2013 minutes - No Quorum Present IV. Public Comments/From the Floor/Announcements V. Provider Reports Prevention Kelly Switch from Life Skills Training to Second Step. Maintaining Protecting You / Protecting Me in the PTSD Blue Heron Middle School will be changing the prevention curriculum presented to all middles school students in the 2013 – 2014 school year from Life Skills Training to Second Steps. Second Step is also an evidence-based curriculum. It is our understanding that they will be maintaining Protecting You/ Protecting Me in the elementary school and for the 5th grade class (Please note that due to a variety of issues, the PY/PM curriculum has never been given to the 4th grade class.) Youth Marijuana Summit, July 10, 2013 Garin Williams, Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock attended a statewide meeting on the issue of Washington State’s implementation of the marijuana laws and regulations at SeaTac on July 10th. The first half of the day was a look at the evidence-based prevention curriculums that have proven to be effective in terms of preventing/delaying marijuana use by youth. The second half of the day dealt with suggestions for the Liquor Control Board in terms of the laws and regulations around marijuana and predictions as to what the legalization of marijuana in Washington State and Colorado could potentially mean both in our state and nationally. 2 NO QUORUM August 13, 2013 Chimacum as the new PRI Site Kelly Matlock has been connecting with community members in Chimacum about the development of the new PRI prevention coalition. The first coalition meeting will be Tuesday, September 17, 2013 in the Humphrey Room at the Jefferson County Public Library from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This first meeting will be an introduction to prevention science and an overview of the development and work of this new coalition. All SAAB members are welcome. Friends of Rich Finn (same as last month plus…) Kelly Matlock and Anne Dean have been meeting with the Friends of Rich Finn to explore ways that we can collaborate on a public awareness campaign. The campaign would be focused on sharing information in the community about the early, middle and late stages to the disease of alcoholism and other addictions and community resources for individuals with substance abuse issues and for friends and family of folks with abuse issues. Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock met with Larry Stein from KPTZ in the end of June to discuss a series of radio discussions focusing on the issue of alcohol use and abuse. At that time Larry Stein said that he would contact Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock when he felt that KPTZ could begin to focus on this project. Currently KPTZ is busy with Centrum events and the upcoming film festival. Public Health Julia Julia handed out a draft agenda for the Board of Health meeting scheduled for August 15, 2013. County Drug and Alcohol Coordinator Ford Ford reported there is a current restructuring of the Family Therapeutic Court program. Ford has been asked to fill the Coordinators position for this program (much like the Coordinator position for Drug Court). Changes have been submitted to Judge Harper for approval. Mental Health Court now has 7 participants with 3 others considering enrollment. Several Mental Health participants have gone to jail for infractions and positive urinalysis. OlyCap is providing housing for Mental Health and Drug Court participants. Mental Health Sam No Report Youth Report Garin No Report VI. Old Business  Jail Relapse Prevention program Fran The program is going well with an increase in the number of women participating. Fran reported the primary substance used by the male participants is alcohol and the secondary substance is heroin. There continues to be 2 female and 2 male AA groups at the jail each week.  Drug Take Back totals Fran/Kay Conner reported the July take back total was 11 lbs, 14 oz. No total for the Sheriff’s department available The King County Drug Take Back plans were introduced to the Jefferson County Board of Health. An informational meeting is scheduled for the next Board of Health meeting (8-15-13) with a state Board of Health member scheduled to speak. 3 NO QUORUM August 13, 2013  Volunteer Opportunities for Youth Garin No Report VII. New Business Fran provided hand outs of educational materials that are available for free. Kelly will review the material contained in the hand outs and make a recommendation to the Board on whether to pursue obtaining this material so SAAB members could distribute it in the community.
