Prevention Kelly
Switch from Life Skills Training to Second Step. Maintaining Protecting You /
Protecting Me in the PTSD
Blue Heron Middle School will be changing the prevention curriculum presented to all
middles school students in the 2013 – 2014 school year from Life Skills Training to
Second Steps. Second Step is also an evidence-based curriculum. It is our
understanding that they will be maintaining Protecting You/ Protecting Me in the
elementary school and for the 5th grade class (Please note that due to a variety of issues,
the PY/PM curriculum has never been given to the 4th grade class.)
Youth Marijuana Summit, July 10, 2013
Garin Williams, Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock attended a statewide meeting on the issue
of Washington State’s implementation of the marijuana laws and regulations at SeaTac
on July 10th. The first half of the day was a look at the evidence-based prevention
curriculums that have proven to be effective in terms of preventing/delaying marijuana
use by youth. The second half of the day dealt with suggestions for the Liquor Control
Board in terms of the laws and regulations around marijuana and predictions as to what
the legalization of marijuana in Washington State and Colorado could potentially mean
both in our state and nationally.

Chimacum as the new PRI Site
Kelly Matlock has been connecting with community members in Chimacum about the
development of the new PRI prevention coalition. The first coalition meeting will be
Tuesday, September 17, 2013 in the Humphrey Room at the Jefferson County Public
Library from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This first meeting will be an introduction to prevention
science and an overview of the development and work of this new coalition. All SAAB
members are welcome.
Friends of Rich Finn (same as last month plus…)
Kelly Matlock and Anne Dean have been meeting with the Friends of Rich Finn to explore
ways that we can collaborate on a public awareness campaign. The campaign would be
focused on sharing information in the community about the early, middle and late stages
to the disease of alcoholism and other addictions and community resources for
individuals with substance abuse issues and for friends and family of folks with abuse
issues.
Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock met with Larry Stein from KPTZ in the end of June to
discuss a series of radio discussions focusing on the issue of alcohol use and abuse. At
that time Larry Stein said that he would contact Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock when he
felt that KPTZ could begin to focus on this project. Currently KPTZ is busy with Centrum
events and the upcoming film festival.
