Approval of Agenda – John Austin asked to be added to the agenda as he had two items about Marijuana to discuss. Agenda approved as amended. II. None III. Approval of the September, 2013 minutes- John Austin/Catharine Robinson/ All IV. Public Comments/From the Floor/Announcements - None V. Provider Reports Prevention Kelly Chimacum as the new PRI Site The new Chimacum prevention coalition had its first meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. The second meeting will be Wednesday, October 9, 2014 at the Chimacum High School Library. All SAAB Board Members are invited. (See meeting flyer) Community Marijuana Forum Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock attended a Community Forum hosted by DBHR (Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery on Friday, October 4, 2013. DBHR, the Department of Health, Washington State Institute for Public Policy (WISSP) and other community partners have begun to prepare for the funding expected in late 2014 from Initiative 502 (I502) marijuana sales tax revenue. This funding is designated for community assessment, media-based education campaigns for adults and youth, prevention hotline, youth marijuana use prevention, youth treatment, and evaluation. Funds might be distributed as early as September 2014. Friends of Rich Finn After meeting with the Friends of Rich Finn, Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock met with Larry Stein from KPTZ in the end of June to discuss a series of radio discussions focusing on the issue of alcohol use and abuse. At that time Larry Stein said that he would contact Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock when he felt that KPTZ could begin to focus on this project. At the time KPTZ was busy with Centrum events and the film festival. Now that the Centrum summer events and film festival are finished, Kelly Matlock emailed Larry Stein requesting another meeting to follow up on the proposed ideas for a series of radio discussions about alcohol abuse. Kelly has also contacted the University 2 Approved November 12, 2013 of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) about possible presenters on the topics of the affects of alcohol on the developing teenage brain and different modalities of alcohol and drug abuse treatment and their effectiveness and different support groups and their efficacy. She is waiting to hear back from Larry Stein and ADAI. Switch from Life Skills Training to Second Steps. Maintaining Protecting You / Protecting Me in the PTSD Blue Heron Middle School will be changing the prevention curriculum presented to all middles school students in the 2013 – 2014 school year from Life Skills Training to Second Steps. Second Steps is also an evidence-based curriculum. It is our understanding that they will be maintaining Protecting You/ Protecting Me in the elementary school and for the 5th grade class (Please note that due to a variety of issues, the PY/PM curriculum has never been given to the 4th grade class.) Anne Dean is continuing to work with Diane Lashinsky, the Principal at Blue Heron Middle School, on community members assisting in the facilitation of these classes. Public Health Julia None. County Drug and Alcohol Coordinator Ford None Mental Health Sam Sam expressed ‘kudos” to the County Commissioners for the support Jefferson mental Health received over funding issues and recommendations from the Regional Support Network (RSN). Sam also reported Jefferson Mental Health is “still treading water.” Training opportunities are currently being explored. Youth Report Garin No Report VI. Old Business  Jail Relapse Prevention program Fran The numbers for the JRP are about the same as last month. It has been reported that currently Methamphetamine use is higher than THC use.  Drug Take Back totals Fran/Kay Fran reported she did not receive a total from the Sherriff’s Department. She also reported the Drug Take Back program at PTPD may need to be suspended due to staffing issues. Kelly Matlock reported it appears it is currently still taking drugs in as she had just dropped off some old prescriptions earlier today.  Volunteer Opportunities for Youth Garin No Report  Friends of Rich Finn Lois Lois reported Michelle Sandoval provided funds to get flyers out into the community via Dove House volunteers. She also reported Poetic Justice is working on next year’s calendar and feels that could be a venue for some community awareness/education. 3 Approved November 12, 2013  King County Take Back Ordinance John A presentation to the State Board of Health is scheduled for November.  New Potential Project (s) Discussion Fran Fran requested ideas from members on new project suggestions. Suggestions included Youth Mentoring, Community Outreach, Peer Counseling, sponsorship with the State, working with the Universities, community presentations. SAAB will work with Kelly Matlock and the Prevention Coalition to develop a plan  Printed Educational Pamphlet Opportunity Kelly/Anne Kelly provided a sample of an educational pamphlet she has been able to get thus far. She will bring in more material as it is received.  Volunteer and Mentoring Fair Kelly In Anne’s absence Kelly reported the fair was very well attended, a great networking for community members and overall a positive event. VII. New Business John Austin handed out an email from David Gifford (DOH) regarding questions about monitoring and regulating the legalization of marijuana. Retiring member, Mike Phimister was recognized for his contributions and participation on the SAAB. Fran announced Arnie Danberg will also be leaving the SAAB. Discussion on the need to recruit members from the recovery community for vacant spots on the board was discussed.
