View Facility Room 6 Meeting Minutes: Board Members Present: Conner Daily, Betty Harmon, Tony Hernandez, John Austin, Catharine Robinson, Mike Blair Board Members Absent: Fran Joswick, Laura Blake, Anne Dean, Ray Hunter Staff Present: Teresa Wirth, Julia Danskin, Kelly Matlock, Staff Absent: Ford Kessler Guests: Sam Markow, Executive Director Jefferson Mental Health I. Approval of Agenda M/S/A John Austin/Betty Harmon/ All II. Tony Hernandez introduced Sam Markow, Executive Director of Jefferson Mental Health. Sam provided some details about himself to the board and then members and staff introduced themselves to Sam. III. Approval of the February, 2010 SAAB meeting minutes—M/S/A Betty Harmon/John Austin/ All IV. Public Comments/From the Floor/Announcements Conner informed the group that Fran had been informed by Tom Brotherton that it would be at least July before notification of Grant awards can be expected. Old Business Update on collateral cost project – Anne No Report Update on RX disposal - Conner Conner Daily met with Dave Stanko from the Rotary to discuss the RX disposal project. Catharine Robinson provided details on the Rotary application process as well as timelines. Some funding for this project has been included in the DOJ grant application. Conner continues to gather information for this project. Discussion and comments between members on the challenges of this project. Application to DOJ for Recidivism Reduction Funds – Tom Brotherton No Report Tony Hernandez provided a copy of the application that was submitted on March 4, 2010. Teresa took the application to place it in SAAB files she maintains. Provider Reports Prevention – Kelly Tobacco Report Karen Obermeyer will periodically be giving a tobacco prevention update to SAAB. Currently she has completed 25 tobacco retailer compliance checks (2 failures). 25 more will be completed by the end of June. TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) has trained 25 Port Townsend High School students to facilitate anti-tobacco classes at Blue Heron next month. JCPH is sponsoring anti-tobacco mug designing competition at the Boiler Room. 2 APPROVED as amended April 13, 2010 Project Alert Karen Obermeyer has completed the 6th grade Project Alert classes at Blue Heron Middle School, is half way through the classes at Quilcene and has just started them at Chimacum. Karen also made a presentation to the Grant Street Elementary School PTA on 3-3-10 on the developing child/teen’s brain and how drugs and alcohol can impact that development. Protecting You / Protecting Me Officer Mike Evans and Officer Dan Huynh of the PT Police have facilitated 7 of the 8 sessions of the PY/Pm classes for the 5th grader at Blue Heron Middle School. Jane Ainsley has facilitated 6 out of the 8 classes for the 2nd grade class, and Jeanie Glaspell will start them on March 25th for the 1st grade. Jeanie will be starting the classes for the 3rd grade right after spring break. Mark Decker decided to start these classes for the 4th grade next school year. Reports back from District staff are very positive about the curriculum. Kelly Matlock will be using CPTS training money from Division of Behavioral Health & Recovery (DBHR) to purchase a copy of the curriculum and one online training for the Quilcene School District. This opportunity has also been offered to Chimacum and Brinnon School District, and they are still deciding it they would like to participate. Our Kids: Our Business Anne Dean and Kelly Matlock wrote two articles that will appear in the next issue of the magazine ―Living on the Peninsula.‖ It will be inserted into The Leader on March 17th. One article is about Our Kids Our Business (OKOB), and the other article is about how the communities can support children and families. SAAB has agreed to partner with the Developmental Disability (DD) Advisory Board and Program’s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder awareness campaign (The Poster and Coaster Campaign) that will be a part of the OKOB campaign. Julia Danskin will be talking to you about SAAB’s participation. Prevention Investigations Karen Obermeyer and Kelly Matlock have begun researching a number of ideas to bring parenting classes and/or groups to Jefferson County. They are also researching a number of other Best Practice curriculums that could be used in Jefferson County schools. Public Health – Julia Barbara Carr with Juvenile Services will be starting a Juvenile Therapeutic Court using funds from the 1/10 of 1% tax. Julia reported the next Board of Health meeting will be on Thursday, March 18, 2010. County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Coordinator’s Report– Ford No Report V.
