APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE LAST MEETING No corrections were noted for the June minutes. M/S/A Laurie Strong and John Austin. IV. PUBLIC COMMENTS/FROM THE FLOOR/ANNOUNCEMENTS Andy Mackie stopped in to provide hand-outs on the upcoming Family Music Festival scheduled on September 1st and 2nd. Andy informed the group that he has a great need for volunteers for these events. V. OLD BUSINESS LAW AND JUSTICE Public Defenders were the topic this month. There will now be a state wide standard that will have to be met by all counties due to the abuse of finances found in Grant County. Ford will make a report at the next meeting. SIX-YEAR PLAN Kelly and Anne have not received any “official” feedback about the Six Year Strategic Plans. However, Kelly did receive an email from Heidi Dodd that went out to all of her prevention specialists. Heidi gave a general “thumbs up” to all of the plans. POWERPOINT SUBCOMMITTEE Kelly handed out copies of a draft of the PowerPoint presentation. Kelly provided a brief description of the intended content of the presentation and stated the PowerPoint project is moving along. Kelly also provided an outline for the potential speakers. Kelly invited all SAAB members to participate in the development of this presentation. DATA/QUESTIONNAIRE SUBCOMMITTEE No report. VI. PROVIDER REPORTS PREVENTION/PUBLIC HEALTH Project Alert- Project Alert classes are now being scheduled for the 2007- 2008 school year for Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Quilcene School Districts. This last year the booster classes were added for the Chimacum School District. Hopefully booster classes for the Quilcene School District will be added for this upcoming year (the booster classes have been presented in Port Townsend for some time). Kelly is also working on the idea of having peer-Education from Peer-in present the booster classes with her for this next school year. Parenting Wisely- The Parenting Wisely programs have arrived. There are videos in both English and Spanish. One set will be kept at the Jefferson County Public Library. The other set will be rotated through the three different school districts. Protecting You / Protecting Me- Protecting You/ Protecting Me is a Best Practice program for 1st through 5th grade. There are 8 lessons for every grade. Kelly has been working on getting the curriculum into the Chimacum and the Port Townsend school districts for the next school year. In negotiating this with the districts Kelly has found the districts have been cautious about committing to this large time commitment without really experiencing the curriculum. Both districts have agreed to have the curriculum used in the 5th grade instead of DARE, which is not a Best Practice program. Kelly has proposed to the districts that she would present the curriculum to another grade level if they will provide a staff person to present the lessons to yet another grade level. All of this is in hopes of “selling” the districts on the program, with the idea that for the 2008-2009 school year they will commit school district staff to present the lessons to all of the grade levels. This has all been under the concept of “capacity building”, developing more prevention programs for the county that are facilitated by other organizations and/or entities. Mini RUad Grant- The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has received a mini RUad Grant. As a part of this grant Kelly will be working with Linda Pfafman to have two Town Hall meetings on underage drinking in Jefferson County this fall. Currently they are considering the possibility of having school assemblies at Port Townsend and Chimacum High Schools and one evening Town Hall meeting. The speaker is Jerry Blackburn, who specializes in the impact of alcohol and drugs on developing teenage neurology. Personal Note- Kelly has been hired to provide the “Human Growth and Development” classes for the 5th through 9th grade classes throughout East Jefferson County. This will have an impact on her prevention specialist position. Things are not clearly worked out at this time, but most likely Kelly will maintain the administrative duties of the prevention position and someone will be hired to do the direct service portion of the of the position. Kelly will keep the SAAB members posted as this is more clearly defined. Julia informed the group that there was a Board of Health meeting scheduled for this Thursday. There will be a representative from Big Brothers/Big Sisters speaking at this meeting. COUNTY ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COORDINATOR’S REPORT Ford reported on the County Oversight meeting. At the meeting oversight mechanisms for the 1/10th of 1 % funds was discussed as funds to cover CODIT are running out. The new biennium contract between Safe Harbor and the State started on July 1st. Some increases for services were included in this contract but Ford stated it was not what was expected. VII. NEW BUSINESS Laurie reported she has had no news concerning the grant application that was submitted. John Barth raised a discussion on the RCW’s and his concerns about the SAAB being in compliance with them. John read several of the RCW’s and voiced his concern that some of the productive members do not meet the criteria to be member of the SAAB. John asked that members read the RCW’s so that these issues can be discussed further before contacts to the Secretary of State are made. Sherry reminded the group that next month is Recovery month and that there have been ongoing discussions about the SAAB members becoming involved in projects for Recovery month. Kelly suggested contacting the local papers about the possibility of a front page story during Recovery month. Connor volunteered to contact the local paper about this idea. It was suggested that a Public Information Committee be formed to develop a story to be submitted the local paper (s). Ford, Catharine, Kelly, Kimber and Connor agreed to be part of this committee. M/S/A Laurie Strong and Sherry Kimbrough. ADJOURN M/S/A Catharine Robinson and Laurie Strong. The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm. Respectfully submitted by Teresa Wirth
