She distributed brochures and a new pre-screen wheel chart that is being distributed throughout the community. Concerned Citizens is the lead local agency for early intervention services in Jefferson and Clallam Counties. They partner with the school districts and she described the specifics on services for each school district. There was discussion about Child Find and referrals from doctor offices. The other programs that Concerned Citizens work with in Jefferson County include: Project Search – serves two of students who are working at the hospital and are having great success. Transition Academy – collaboration from Chimacum School District, Skookum. The Individual Supported Employment (ISC) – four people working either in paid employment or are moving toward that point. DVR Program – advocacy for People First. Personal care for seniors in the community and people with disabilities. Community Access –for people that are of retirement age that have tried the work program and chose to opt-out and go into a different day program with a focus and goal of being more active in the community in a meaningful way to them. Update – Skookum Lisa Falcone, Program Manager for Skookum, gave an update on their activities. Skookum currently has 20 individuals working throughout the county and individualized employment, 13 are currently employed. She shared several recent success stories and explained more specifically what people are doing in their jobs. Lisa discussed the improving relationship and positive experiences with both the Port Townsend and the Sequim Good Will stores. New management has been very cooperative and supportive. There is currently a client working at the Port Townsend store 20 hours/week (helping to stock shelves) and another client who works 17 hours/week at the Sequim store (in production). It seems to be a very good fit for both clients and has been a very positive experience. Update – Jefferson County Transition Network Retreat Anna McEnery, DD Coordinator, and Kathryne Kent, Learning Services Director-Port Townsend School District, shared about the retreat. Kathryne was very enthusiastic about the amazing collaboration of the meeting, and felt it important to celebrate how far they’ve come in the last 4 years as they have worked together toward a new focus that will determine the next steps. Developmental Disability Advisory Board - Minutes 09/27/11 Page 3 of 4 Many of the stakeholders participated in refocusing and clarifying of roles. Kathy Goldenburger did an excellent job of facilitating at the retreat. Anna talked about future goals and her enthusiasm that this is a good “blue-print” to move forward with. Update – Community Connectors Project in Jefferson County Anna McEnery explained that the Community Connectors Project is still very much in the planning stages. Anna, Carl Hanson, and Janie Nelson met and developed the vision: to have a lunch for employers who have employed people with developmental disabilities and have them speak to their experience; possibly show some testimonial videos; and a speaker. This would be a promotional effort to identify potential employers and bring them on-board. They are looking for an event to take place in October. They are looking for ways to show the testimonial videos (interviews with employer and employees) out in the community that will demonstrate the real benefits that employers are experiencing. Possible PSA’s on TV/radio/Rose Theatre. They want to show-case this untapped gold-mine of employees who are enthusiastic, hard-working and loyal, emphasizing that this goes beyond “charity” and is actually good business practice that benefits the bottom-line. The group will be meeting again on April 5th, all are welcome. Update – Partners for Work, Rotary Project Anna McEnery reported on a presentation given to the Port Townsend Rotary on February 14th. by Debbie Moore. Ms. Moore works for the WA Initiative for Supported Employment. There were many Rotarians present who had not previously considered employing people with developmental disabilities. This national project focuses on creating “greeter” positions in each Rotary, usually a Transition Student who is hired by the local Rotary to help setup the room, sell and take tickets, serve food, clean up room, etc. We would like to create a greeter position in the Port Townsend Rotary, but there are a lot of hoops to go through before we can reach that goal. Anna met by phone with Bill James (future President of Rotary for 2013) and Debbie Moore to discuss details about how this program has worked in Issaquah and Mercer Island Rotaries, to give him an idea of what it entails. Bill James was very interested and is taking the information to the Board. If a good match is found, it will allow potential employers to see the value of a competent worker who enjoys and wants to be working. Anna is also considering a presentation to Kiwanis. Slideshow Presentation on Jefferson County Community Network’s Project MENTOR Project MENTOR is funded by Community Network (Anne Dean, Program Manager). Slides were shown to the group showing seniors working with people with developmental disabilities. The premise is that retired senior volunteers work with young students or adults and share vocational skills with them. DVD Presentation – Sirens Employment Anna showed a 4 minute DVD that she had put together with the help of Jim Corey. It featured an interview with Chris _________, who works side jobs at Sirens restaurant. The video showed Chris working at his tasks and incorporated interviews with both he and his employer (Kris Nelson, owner of Sirens). Kris shared very positive remarks about Chris and his work ethic, and endorsed this kind of community support for people with developmental disabilities.
