New Business and Presentations: Olympic Workforce Development Council Jim McKenna, Manager of the Olympic Workforce Development Council, gave a presentation explaining the Council’s mission, job search services, job search resources, assistive technology and tools, workshops and employer services. Jim fielded questions from the Board.  Discussion about assistive technology. Anna recommended that the WorkSource website provide a list of available assistive technology equipment/tools with links to “how to” guides. Jim said he will request it at the State level. Information will be added to the DD Resource Guide.  Anna suggested the possibility of finding a teen or retired volunteer who is skilled with computers to help job searchers one-on-one with their computer needs. Jim responded, noting that it is difficult to supervise volunteers in a one person office. Developmental Disability Advisory Board - Minutes 09/25/12 Page 2 of 3  Suggestions on how the DDAB might be of assistance to support and help WorkSource: 1) Help get the word out about their services and resources. 2) Work together on developing a list of potential volunteers for the assistive technology that would cross-match volunteers to specific training needs. Anna suggested contacting the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) might be a good resource to pursue. Anna will follow up with them. 3) Help keep the conversation going about “what is happening out there” and any potential opportunities for collaborating such as the annual Chamber event. Community Connectors Planning Group Carl Hanson reported that the planning for the “Work With Me” event has been going very well. Anna shared about the promotional materials (poster, decals, business cards, newspaper article/photo). Also pursuing other marketing avenues and will try to do a radio show. Planning on attendance of 50 for breakfast – the cost is being covered by the business sponsors. The County is paying for the space. The planning has been quite a process – thanks to all who have been involved. The plan is to make this an annual business event. DDAB Sub-Committee for Forum & Retreat Carl talked about the Needs Assessment Survey – it is being made available in a variety of formats: Survey Monkey, the Public Health website, phone survey, snail-mail and electronically. Hope to gather surveys by October 18th. The Forum will be on November 6th from 4:30 to 6:00 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Thanks to Leslie, Carl, Kim and Lisa who have been involved in the process of putting together the survey. Will meet again after results of survey have come through to put together the agenda for the Forum. Old Business & Informational Items – Anna McEnery Anna gave brief updates on the following:  Rose Theater Movie Fundraiser – WRETCHES & Jabbers – Raised over $1,000 for People First and Special Olympics – Sunday 29th at noon.  Lunch with anita delight, DDD Region 3 Administrator 9/24/12 – Successful tour and meeting with anita (she wanted to make sure she visited every county in her region).  Partners for Work - Kiwanis – They are unable to help because they meet at the Highway 20 Roadhouse (cannot have anyone under 21 because it is a bar) and they also do not have the funds. Developmental Disability Advisory Board - Minutes 09/25/12 Page 3 of 3  Project MENTOR – Will be up and running. Anne Dean will be the main person running that program.  STEP-UP Emergency Prep Classes for Mental Health – Day Treatment Program & Future Classes for Victoria House – Classes are done and now hope to schedule with Victoria House  Grant Opportunity from Washington State ARC – About working with middle school families with children who have developmental disabilities to help them understand the Social Security system, disability related benefits, introduction to guardianship, planning for the future, introduction to adult services and navigating the school system with an eye to the future. We were 1 of 7 counties who applied ($60,000), 3 counties have responded. She will explore further and see how we can move forward here in our county with this. It’s a 2 year grant so it would be $20,000 for each county, if it is divided evenly. Public Comment No comments at this time. Agenda Planning There will be no meeting in November or December. Need to think about a Board Retreat – usually planned after the Forum. Anna will contact Board with more information. Adjournment Meeting adjourned at 5:00.
