HomeMy WebLinkAbout201405_DDAB Minutes Developmental Disability Advisory Board - Minutes 05/27/2014 Page 1 of 2 JEFFERSON COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH 615 Sheridan Street  Port Townsend  Washington  98368 www.jeffersoncountypublichealth.org Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board (DDAB) M I N U T E S May 27, 2014 Board Attendees: Carl Hanson (Co-Chair), Lesly Sheinbaum (Co-chair), John Austin, Kris Nelson, Kim Rafferty, Leesa Monroe, Absent: Claudia Edmondson Guests: Lisa Burress (Skookum), Janie Nelson-Achodor (Concerned Citizens), Susan Prince (Concerned Citizens) Staff: Anna McEnery CALL TO ORDER Co-Chair Sheinbaum called the meeting to order at 3:16 pm. APPROVAL OF AGENDA No revisions or corrections required to the draft agenda. Member Nelson moved to approve the agenda as written. The motion was seconded by Co-Chair Hanson. The motion passed unanimously. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM NOVEMBER 19, 2013 Member Austin noted that there was no March 25, 2014 meeting, as noted in the minutes. Member Austin moved to approve the minutes. The motion was seconded by Co-Chair Hanson. The motion passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS No public comment. NEW BUSINESS AND PRESENTATIONS 1. Revised Board/Staff Action Goals a. Housing Sub-Committee (Anna McEnery, Co-Chair Hanson, Co-Chair Sheinbaum, Al Latham, and Les Parker) Ms. McEnery reported that the Housing Sub-Committee will hold an upcoming community forum on Thursday May 29th from 4:30 to 7pm in the Cotton Building. 42 people are signed up to attend. The Housing Sub-Committee is going to have follow-up meetings with the Housing Authority, OlyCAP, and the USDA at the end of June. Ms. McEnery will send out a meeting notice. Member Austin requested Ms. McEnery provide information to him on what the USDA considers poverty level to be for low-income families. b. Marketing Sub-Committee (Anna McEnery, Co-Chair Hanson, and Member Monroe) Ms. McEnery reported that the Marketing Sub-Committee created a two-prong presentation for Board Members to use for marketing purposes. They are currently exploring newspapers, a radio show, and identifying goals that came out of the community forum. 2. Marketing Presentation with Employment Videos of People with Developmental Disabilities Developmental Disability Advisory Board - Minutes 05/27/2014 Page 2 of 2 a. Co-Chair Hanson presented videos highlighting employees with developmental disabilities working at Pippa’s Real Tea, Center Valley Animal Rescue, and Goodwill. 3. Skookum Program Update b. Lisa Burress, Program Manager, updated the board on the progress of Skookum. 19 Individuals are currently being served, including 15 employed and 4 looking for employment. Skookum is currently hiring for a Part-Time employment specialist. The Board will get back to Ms. Burress with any ideas for job creation. 4. Concerned Citizens Update c. Janie Nelson-Achodor, Program Manager, reported to the Board that four people are utilizing employment services – two are working, two are volunteering. Three people are utilizing community access services, and five are involved with Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). 16 children are involved in early intervention services (Birth to Three), including 9 children from South County and 7 in Port Townsend. 5. The History of Transition in Jefferson County d. Susan Prince, Coordinator, updated the board that in December of 2013 the Transition Academy was closed due to the educational needs and academic goals not being met. Ms. McEnery will get a group of Board members together to speak with the Superintendent, School Board and Principal to see what can be done next. OLD BUSINESS & INFORMATIONAL ITEMS 1. Updates/Informational Items a. Ms. McEnery provided the board with a public records request submitted by Disability Rights Washington. Ms. McEnery has already responded to the request and provided all the requested items. The Jefferson County DD Community Plans were included in the submittal of the public records request. b. Ms. McEnery informed the board of a grant opportunity from the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues & Employment and will form a committee. A meeting will be set up with Toby Olson, Executive Secretary of the Committee, to discuss suggestions of projects, confirm how to apply, how much funding is available, and the reimbursement process. c. Ms. McEnery handed out an updated DD Advisory Board Calendar with the correct July meeting date circled. Co-Chair Sheinbaum asked that her telephone number be updated. Corrected calendars will be distributed to the Board via email. 2. Upcoming Workshops/ Meetings: a. Member Monroe invited the Board to attend the upcoming Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH) Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 3, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Senior Center in Port Townsend, and announced that they are looking for DASH Board Members.
