Dear Ms. Allen,
Please forward this to the Hearing Officer regarding the marijuana plant on Marrowstone Island. As a person who voted to pass the legalization of marijuana in Washington State,
I resent that the movement against the development of a marijuana plant on our quiet rural island is being portrayed as being against marijuana. The outcry you are hearing would be
heard for any other 10,080 square foot plant on Marrowstone Island. In 1978, The Marrowstone Island Plan was adopted as part of the Jefferson County Comprehensive Plan. In the Marrowstone
Island Plan, small cottage industries were outlined and accepted. This plant is NOT a small cottage industry with the property owner residing and taking part in the Marrowstone Island
community.
This is a land use issue and construction of a large-scale industrial factory is ill-advised. The Jefferson County Police and the East Jefferson County Fire Department, expressed
concern and admit that the inaccessibility of Marrowstone will complicate any services they can provide. Propane tanks and the possibility of an explosive fire has been seen in other
states and is a huge concern for our rural community.
It was noted by Austin Smith that there is a “buffer” of wood between his property and Smitty’s RV Park. However, he did not address the fact that this is NOT his land and could
be logged at any time, thus eliminating the buffer between the factory and island residents.
Lastly, as a family that relies on well water, not public water, we are extremely concerned that the County is NOT requiring an environmental test. We are calling for SEPA to conduct
a test to ensure that our water will remain drinkable.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I know you will take all these factors into consideration as you reach your decision. We Marrowstone Residents trust that you will take
the impact of an industrial plant on our peaceful island.
