Additions
There were no additions.
PT LTAC – Christina Pivarnik
Website is up. The other major milestone is that we put out a proposal to
Washington Cities and Counties Management Association to have them bring heir
summer conference to Port Townsend. Are up against Suncadia Resort which has
everything under one roof and Port Townsend doesn’t though Port Townsend has
more to offer in other ways.
Have the meetings video done and is under the tab, “meet.” EnjoyPT will be
producing five more videos including one on history encompassing part of, “We
Came with Dreams.”
Have been working on the Summit with Mary. We need about 30 more registrations
to break even. Please encourage everyone to come.
PT is gearing up to do a big holiday promotion. The City has had to cut pack on
budgets and Mainstream was cut about $10,000. Are targeting Seattle to Portland
with tag line, “Follow me to PT, come home for the holidays.”
Commissioner’s Update – John Austin
Hotel/Motel Lodging Tax: Has bounced up from August, which was one of the lowest
Augusts we have had. We had good weather and we had two ferries.
County Budget: We don’t anticipate having to make any more cuts.
Jefferson County LTAC Budget Presentations meeting is scheduled for Oct. 26, from
9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The new clerk of the BOCC, Beth Hill, started Monday and will be replacing Lorna,
who has retired.
John is going to the Tourism Summit and he thinks that Philip might go, as well.
OPTC: Diane is on vacation
It was determined that most of us were at the OPTC meeting to hear the updates and
are “up to speed.”
Training for New Hospitality – Joy
We need to determine how to help lodgings. It is essential now with the poor
economy. Discussion about outreach to new lodgings as well as how to more
positively interact with present lodgings to get them more involved in our
advertising and promotions.
Maintenance of olympicpeninsula.org - Joy
Gloria has problems with SPAM and with personal businesses that run lodgings that
are advertising festivals and events. Gloria was inserting them and some of them
had worms. She has been working to recover from this. We need to determine how
to put up our community sites in ways that do not allow worms, etc.
Another issue is that Bill is not getting paid for maintaining olympicpeninsula.org
site for Port Ludlow and Port Hadlock. Nathan has already had Bill make some
changes. Nathan is going to create the content and Bill will temporarily make
changes. The communities involved, Port Ludlow and Port Hadlock, must figure out
how to do this and relieve Bill of this job that is not his responsibility.
Goal Setting:
Are we going to go in the direction of activities or are we going to stay with major
marketing pieces. In the past year, in addition to advertising and promotions, we
have contributed to the Bike Map, Waterfall Trail Brochure, Culinary Loop, Activity
Map. What do we want to do this next year? Nathan requested to see what the goals
were for last year and what the results were. Kitti will send past Campaign reports:
Spring and Fall Campaigns 2010 and 2011, as well as Debbie Black’s reports.
Christina will send a copy of their Goals for 2011 for distribution to the board.
Last year, TCC concentrated advertising on bicyclists and fisherman. We didn’t
really see a lot of results from that last year, but this year, we have really reaped the
benefits from those campaigns. Joy requested that for our November meeting, we
each develop a list of goals to bring to the table.
New Business
Carol is looking at email Cass Brotherton who bought the store at Quilcene. Are
having work parties at the village store from 8-5 on Fridays. Bring your tools, we are
working for the next two months. We will have gas.
Carol would like to host a TCC meeting at the Museum to be able to show the new
property. Fund raising is still in the silent campaign. Would like to have about 40%
in the bank before they open it up to the public. Carol left at 10:17 am.
Discussion about meeting venues for next year. Kitti will check several venues and a
prospective meeting calendar will be drafted for the next meeting.
Note: WTA address has changed from Seattle to Tacoma to 1119 Pacific Avenue,
Tacoma, where the regional VCB is. WTA had a three-hour board meeting. Various
communities are working on things. It is a very cool thing to be following the
communities that are working Statewide. There will be a State Summit in April or
May at Seatac. Will go to Spokane to work on a strategic business plan for the
coming year and will communicate those goals at the summit. Susanne has been
working very hard and is finding a lot of negativism in the east side. The good news
is that the Board is really aware of that and sensitive to it and so is Susanne.
Christina and Diane are trying to incorporate rural cities and towns, and feel that is
what they bring to the Board because we are very rural.
WTA is doing a Round Table in Olympia right now and Debbie Wardrop and
Christina will be at the Seattle Round Table on Thursday. Membership: $5,000 will
stay at that level for this next year. Was also an interesting thing to note that the
only governments to date to become members of the WTA are Port of Seattle and
City of Port Townsend.
Fall Marketing Campaign – Debbie Black
The conference phone at WSU was not working and Debbie was not able to
make a verbal report. Debbie Black’s full written report is included here:
Olympic Culinary Adventure
The Olympic Culinary Adventure route had some celebrity traffic this past week!
Graham Kerr, the ,
Galloping Gourmet one of television’s first celebrity chefs,
traveled the route from October 2-7 en route to the Dungeness Crab & Seafood
Festival where he kicked-off the Gateway Center Chef Demonstration State.
Diane Schostak designed an excellent itinerary for Kerr and his wife, Treena,
which started in Shelton and took them up the east side of the Peninsula through
Lilliwaup and Brinnon and Quilcene, then on to Chimacum, Port Townsend, and
Sequim and finally their destination, Port Angeles.
The Kerr’s tour expanded upon the Culinary Adventure route with stops at Taylor
Shellfish, Coast Seafood, Red Dog Farm in Chimacum and Jefferson County
Hospital, where they had lunch with Executive Chef Arran Stark. They also
visited the Hama Hama Oyster Farm & Seafood Store, The Resort at Port
Ludlow’s Fireside Restaurant, Finnriver Farm & Cidery, the Alder Wood Bistro,
Nash’s Farm Store, and the Wild Fire Grill, all official stops along the route.
Kerr wrote a blog post for Edible Seattle about his discoveries during the early
part of his trip, http://www.edibleseattle.com/lyftenbloggie.htm, with a second
post-trip blog upcoming; gave an interview on KONP radio’s Todd Ortloff Show
th
on October 5 while en route; and will be penning a post-trip article for
SeattleDining.com. I contributed an article about his trip to The Vancouver Sun,
which ran online on October 7. An abbreviated version ran in the print edition on
th
October 8.

The Kerr’s very much enjoyed their trip, and found it a very eye-opening
experience. They have already scheduled a return trip in December, however, it
will be a private getaway. It is hoped that Kerr will be an advocate for culinary
tourism on the Peninsula.
All destination venues on the Culinary Adventure route have received a supply of
the printed promotional piece, and the fliers were provided to organizers for
distribution at culinary events, including the Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival,
the Cranberry Harvest Festival, and the upcoming Mushroom Festival at Lake
Quinault Lodge.
Banner ads continue to rotate throughout Seattle Dining’s website, linking to the
Culinary Adventure web page hosted by Seattle Dining. Eight culinary adventure
destinations have posted a web banner on their own websites; 5 have not; and 3
venues do not have websites.
The Olympic Culinary Adventure will be promoted in another SeattleDining.com
e-blast in November.
To date, Connie Adams reports that 16 individuals have registered with Seattle
Dining to participate in the Culinary Trivia contest, up from 3 in last month’s
report. To date, she has not received any photos or answers to trivia questions.
Paid Advertising Schedule
Our on-air schedules on KWJJ 99.5 The Wolf in Portland, 88.5 KPLU, and 98.1
KING FM are now complete. This week is last in our 3-week schedule on KOMO
AM/FM and KVI AM, and our 3-week schedule on STAR 101.5 FM starts next
week, running through the week of 10/31.
An ad highlighting the Olympic Culinary Adventure and offering $5 off the price of
e-
a crab dinner at the Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival was distributed in an
blast
to Star 101.5 listeners on 10/6. My KOMO rep apologized that the same ad
was mistakenly left out of an e-blast to KOMO listeners, which was scheduled for
distribution on the same day. This ad will instead run in a KOMO e-blast on 11/3,
at no charge
. I’ve contacted the Olympic Peninsula Wineries Association to see
if they’d be interested in offering a discount on tickets to their November wine
tour.
Fisher will either refund the cost of the ad to us, or we have the option of doing a
second e-blast in November.
Our electronic ads will be running in KOMO’s daily weather email during the
weeks of 10/17 and 10/24. In addition, KOMO has given us a bonus ad in the
weather email, which started running yesterday, 10/10 and will continue through
10/24.
Facebook ads
I have posted 3 , two that focus on the Olympic Culinary
Adventure, and one that focuses on general fall activity.
Promotion
Several vendors have contributed attractive packages for the promotional
opportunities available through our radio partners.
