SUMMARY:
Supervises observes and instructs subordinates in corrections responsibilities, and/or other
relevant duties, by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following in addition to the duties required of a Corrections Officer with a limited
commission. Other duties may be assigned.
Assume responsibility for efficient, orderly and secure operation of the Corrections facility on an
assigned shift, function, area or task, and supervise all subordinate personnel assigned. Assume
responsibility for the operation of the Control Room and general jail security.
Ensure that all reports and other materials submitted by subordinates are correct and completed
in accordance with department policies and procedures, and properly routed.
Inspect the Corrections Facility, to include all living and working areas, for cleanliness and
adherence to Jefferson County Jail rules and regulations; and supervise visiting, inmate exercise
periods and all other inmate activity.
Supervise the physical searches of inmates and the separate segments of the Facility for
contraband and other prohibited items; and evaluate incoming inmates for confinement
classification and orient them to Facility rules and regulations.
Must analyze situations quickly and objectively to recognize actual and potential danger and to
determine proper course of action. Unusual problems and situations are referred to the
Superintendent of Corrections.
Interview and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and
discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems, as well as other duties that may

be assigned. Motivate subordinates. Investigate allegations of employee misconduct and prepare
recommendations. Counsel subordinates on performance and discipline -related matters; and
review reports of daily activities and other reports of subordinates.
Ensure that the department policies and procedures are adhered to by subordinate personnel and
that they receive proper and adequate direction, training and instruction.
Supervise the scheduling of annual leave, compensatory time off and sick leave; maintain related
records. Plan and prepare work schedules to ensure required shift or unit staffing; recommend
alternate work schedules when appropriate to manpower and activity levels.
Prepare objective and timely evaluation reports on subordinates; conduct evaluation interviews.
Identify training needs and assist in providing training to subordinates in all areas of their work.
Assist subordinates in understanding law enforcement principles and procedures and other police
related subjects.
Participate in development of goals and objectives, special projects and perform other duties
when assigned. Use and oversee computer operations for various Corrections operations.
Keep informed of current laws related to Law Enforcement (Washington State Criminal Law,
Traffic Code, as well as various jurisdictions' criminal codes and ordinances) and keep informed
of new techniques, court decisions and laws through publications and in-service training.
Recommend new or revised work methods and procedures and convey information to
subordinates.
Comply with Fire Prevention preparedness duties as outlined in policies and procedures.
Ensure Corrections staff prepare incident reports on all infractions observed and ensure that all
violations of law by in -custody residents are reported in accordance with department policy.
Supervise the recruiting, selection and monitoring of those inmates who demonstrate that they
will abide by all rules and regulations, and follow the directions of the Corrections staff when
assigned to Trustee status.
Evaluate the need for maintenance or repair of equipment.
Resolve complaints from the public or agencies served regarding information given or service
provided; refer to a higher authority when appropriate.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and
applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning,
assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees;
addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
At the time of promotion have had one (1) year as a Commissioned Corrections Officer
with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office; successful completion of the probationary
period; High School Diploma or General Education Diploma; successful completion of
the Criminal Justice Training Commission's Corrections Officer Academy (COA), or
Corrections Officer Equivalency Academy (COEA) and one or more of the following:
• Held a leadership or supervision role within the department.
• Prior experience in a relevant field of work with a leadership or
supervision role.
• College education with a minimum of a two (2) year college degree.
• Additional experience as a Commissioned Corrections Officer.
LANGUAGE SHILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex guidelines, general business periodicals,
professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; ability to write
reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; and ability to effectively
present information and respond to questions from attorneys, groups of managers, clients,
customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SHILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and
100's; and ability to perform these operations using units of currency and weight
measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or
diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft
Office Suite, or similar office computing software; Basic knowledge of databases and Jail
Management Software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Washington State Driver's License
Certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission as a Corrections
Officer.
Ability to satisfactorily complete Washington State certification for first level supervision within
six (6) months of accepting promotion to Sergeant.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to supervise and control groups of prisoners; ability to exercise discretion and judgment
in the handling of inmates; and handle a variety of potentially hostile and dangerous situations in
a calm, competent manner; and the ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, tactfully and
with respect to individual rights.
Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and modern supervisory practices and
procedures in a law enforcement environment. Ability to plan, supervise, schedule and evaluate
the work of subordinates effectively.
Ability to organize and maintain an effective, responsible and concerned staff. Ability to lead,
control and motivate subordinates.
Ability to read and interpret information related to laws, court decisions and new procedures and
accurately conveys this information to subordinates.
Knowledge of the responsibilities and functions of the Sheriffs Department, including functions
of line operations and coordination of efforts between Corrections, Administration and line
operations for the protection of life and property.
Knowledge of operating procedures, as well as modern police practices, and methods.
Knowledge of the controlling laws and ordinances, and the rules, regulations and policies of
Jefferson County and the State of Washington.
Knowledge of Corrections operation including post assignments, procedures, policies, WAC's,
medical and inmate security.
The ability to develop and retain skill in the use and care of a variety of firearms and equipment.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine an appropriate course of
action. Ability to coordinate several job tasks with minimum personnel.

possibly dangerous situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Sitting or standing for long periods of time may be required by the circumstances of an
assignment. Substantial in person contact with public, suspects and other law enforcement
agencies require the ability to hear voice communications and respond appropriately. Must be
able to hear, understand and respond to two-way radio communications.
Outdoor work may include standing for long periods of time, walking, running jumping or
physical exertion in hot weather, rain, snow, ice or other slippery conditions
This assignment requires the incumbent to work a rotating shift day, swing and graveyard.
