SUBJECT: National Bike Month Proclamation
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
There are myriad benefits to bicycling, including health and environmental. Many jurisdictions and
community groups proclaim and recognize the month of May as National Bike Month.

I recommend the BOCC sign the attached proclamation.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the bicycle is an economical, healthy, convenient and environmentally sound
form of transportation and an excellent tool for recreation and enjoyment of Jefferson County's scenic
beauty; and
WHEREAS, bicycling has been shown to improve citizens' health, well-being and quality of
life, growing the economy, attracting tourism, improving traffic safety, supporting student learning
outcomes, and reducing pollution, congestion, and wear and tear on our roads; and
WHEREAS, the Community Health Improvement Plan was adopted by the Jefferson County
Board of Health and the Board of Jefferson County Public Hospital District No. 2 and specifically calls
for an increase in physical activity for adults and children as a strategy to prevent chronic diseases; and
WHEREAS, in the County's 2017-2022 Transportation Improvement Program, 9 of the top 20
prioritized projects include bike trails and improved safety for cyclists; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County adopted the Climate Action Plan in 2007 which calls for a
decrease in the production of greenhouse gases and an increase in infrastructure for non -motorized
transportation; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County's roads and trail system attracts bicyclists each year, providing
economic benefits, transportation, tourism and scenic appreciation; and
WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month with communities across the nation promoting
bicycling, especially on Wednesday, May 9th, National Bike to School Day, and Friday, May 18th,
National Bike to Work Day;
NOW THEREFORE, we, Board of County Commissioners, do hereby declare the month of
May, 2018 as
Bike Month
in Jefferson County, and we encourage all residents and visitors to enjoy our County from the saddle of
a bicycle.
