Commissioners Office
JEFFERSON COUNTY
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
TO: Board of County Commissioners
Philip Morley, County Administrator
FROM: Mark McCauley, > Director Central Services /
DATE: May 21, 2018
SUBJECT: Penny Creek Pit
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Jefferson County owns a permitted sand and gravel pit, Penney Creek Pit, acquired in 1989 that it no longer
needs.
ANALYSIS:
The County incurs unnecessary costs to maintain the site and to keep the mining permit active. Public Works
meets its material and material storage needs using other facilities, Quilcene Pit, for example. Declaring the
property surplus and selling it would yield revenue to the county, eliminate unnecessary costs, put the
property back on the tax rolls, potentially create jobs and provide a close, cost effective source for processed
materials for Public Works.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of County Commissioners authorize staff to begin a public outreach effort through the use of
local media regarding the County potentially declaring the Penney Creek Pit property as surplus.
