HomeMy WebLinkAbout20170620_NPCMRCMtgSumNPC MRC 6/20/2017 FINAL Meeting Summary 1 June 20th, 2017 NPC MRC FINAL Meeting Summary The Tuesday, June 20th, 2017 NPC MRC meeting took place at the Hemlock Forest Room, Olympic National Resources Center, at 1455 Forks Avenue, Forks, WA from 4:02 (00:00:00 on the audio counter) to 5:47 PM. Appointed committee members present at the meeting were Rod Fleck (City of Forks Rep.), Jennifer Hagen (Quileute Tribe Rep.), John Hunter (Citizen Rep., Clallam County – Education), Deb Kucipeck (Clallam County Rep.), Rich Osborne (Citizen Rep., Clallam County – Science), Tami Pokorny (Jefferson County Rep., Coordinator/Facilitator), Dana Sarff (Makah Tribe Rep.), Jill Silver (Citizen Rep., Jefferson County – Conservation/Environment) and Chiggers Stokes (Citizen Rep., Jefferson County – Recreational Groups). Rebekah Brooks (ONRC), Frank Hanson (ONRC) and Katie Krueger (member of the public) were also present. Introductions Public Comments Tami Pokorny announced that Ed Ansorg’s seat as a representative for Jefferson County is now open and she will be advertising for the position soon. *If anyone has any suggestions, please let Tami know. Jill Silver discussed the possible NPC MRC funding opportunity for a citizen science mud minnow research project. Additions to and Approval of the Agenda The agenda was approved by consensus. Approval of the April and May Meeting Summaries The summaries were approved by consensus. Announcements Tami Pokorny announced that the upcoming wind energy event sponsored by the University of Washington will be more of an overview of wind-based energy instead of a workshop on small-scale wind energy. The presentation will be at the ONRC in August and may be a good opportunity to test what may be feasible for off- shore energy sources with scientists. Old Business Transit Center Tami Pokorny showed the paintings of photographs that Vern Hestand crafted. There were nine pictures, but only eight will fit in the transit center. The group voted not to include Taft Creek. New Business West End Natural Resources Newsletter NPC MRC 6/20/2017 FINAL Meeting Summary 2 The group had very positive feedback on the rough draft of the Newsletter. *Any comments need to be in to Tami Pokorny by noon tomorrow. COASST Training A training for COASST is scheduled for Saturday; Chiggers Stokes and John Hunter are planning to attend. What Does Each Organization Need From the NPC MRC? Discussion followed. Suggestions included printing tote bags for the preschool/kindergarten field trip Nature Day at ONRC, hosting a marine presenter for an ONRC Evening Talk, funds for field trips, ROV competition materials, a small ROV for underwater research or seed money for match for one, continuing the West End Natural Resources Newsletter, funding a natural history presenter at the Forks Visitor Center, supporting local interest in nature photography, recruiting young people to develop a NPC MRC Facebook page or to solicit proposals that would engage a Facebook or social media presence, an ocean acidification project, funding marine murals in Forks, sponsoring an event to host ship-to-shore live video feed from Research Vessel Ocean Exploration Trust, building an ocean resource kiosk in the Forks Library, marine education in local schools such as downloadable high school curriculum on the local marine environment, some kind of data compilation by a grad student, sending someone to Capitol Hill Ocean Week, and solar energy to supply Transit Center or new sign for east side of the building. Review 2016 RFP The dates have not yet been set because the funding amount is unknown. MRC Summit *Rod Fleck volunteered to be on the Summit call next week. Funding sources and topics are the main issues to be worked out. Ideas for topics included Salmon Beyond Borders, human activities on the Columbia River, ocean acidification, the OCNMS sentinel station and climate change awareness. Updates Marine Debris (All) Dana Sarff reported that there has not been much debris on the Neah Bay beaches, even at the coastal cleanup. Jennifer Hagen described a new item showing up on beaches: unidentified small, orange pieces of plastic. Washington Coast Marine Advisory Council/Marine Spatial Planning The next meeting has not been scheduled yet, but will probably be in September. Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council The last meeting was held 5/19/17 in Neah Bay. The Tatoosh has run out of maintenance funding and work is being done at the Feiro Marine Life Center. The next meeting is scheduled for 7/21/17 at the ONRC. Rich Osborne will be giving an overview on ONRC marine projects. Washington Marine Resources Advisory Council (MRAC) The council has not met since the last NPC MRC meeting, so there was nothing new to report. Fossil Fuels Related (All) There was nothing new to report. Administration and Fiscal Agent Update NPC MRC 6/20/2017 FINAL Meeting Summary 3 The grant round is almost over. CoastSavers and the Forks High School are on track with their funding; COASST is on track as much as possible; there is no news from Feiro yet. A ROV training will be at ONRC tomorrow. Next Agenda (July 18th) Public Comments/General Frank Hanson announced that this Friday is the ONRC Evening Talk.
