SUBJECT: Enriched Afterschool Programming in Quilcene and Brinnon School
Districts
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Working in collaboration with Jefferson County Parks and Recreation, Jefferson Healthcare, the Quilcene
School District and the Brinnon School District, Jefferson County WSU Extension has created an opportunity
for a new afterschool program (ASP) in the Brinnon School District. The Brinnon School District does not
have an afterschool program (ASP). ASPs are a best practice for improved health, safety, and educational
outcomes. We are requesting $18,000 of additional funding by Jefferson County for the ASP programming in
Quilcene and Brinnon.
ANALYSIS:
ASP programs yield lasting health, safety, educational, and economic benefits for a minimal investment.
RECOMMENDATION:
Fund the Quilcene and Brinnon ASPs as an ongoing investment beginning in the fall of 2018. Opportunities to
expand the program and seek supporting funding from other sources in 2019/2020 will be explored.
