NEW PUBLIC HEARING ON COMMERCIAL SHOOTING FACILITY ORDINANCE
SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 24, 2018 at 5:30 PM
October 4th Session Canceled
NEW HEARING. The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners is scheduling a new Public
Hearing on a proposed Commercial Shooting Facility Ordinance for Wednesday, October 24,
2018 at 5:30 PM in the McCurdy Pavilion located at Fort Worden in Port Townsend.
PRIOR HEARING CANCELLED. A public hearing continuance session previously announced
for 6:30 PM Thursday October 4, 2018 is CANCELLED.
Jefferson County cancelled the October 4th session and has scheduled a brand new Public
Hearing on October 24 in McCurdy Pavilion to accommodate in one room the large number of
people who wish to testify on the proposed Commercial Shooting Facility Ordinance.
A prior public hearing held in the County Courthouse on Monday evening October 1 attracted
approximately 330 citizens staged throughout the Courthouse and on the apron outside. Sound
systems were operating everywhere that people waited for their turn to speak, which allowed
everyone there to hear all of the proceedings. Everyone who wished to speak and remained in
attendance on October 1 gave their oral testimony, allowing the meeting to recess by 10:08 PM.
Despite accommodating everyone in attendance, concerns were raised about the venue and
whether this met the requirements of the state’s Open Public Meetings Act. To eliminate any
doubt, the County is scheduling a brand new public hearing.
All written testimony received about the proposed ordinance on or after September 12, 2018 will
be included as part of the public hearing record for the new Public Hearing. Anyone, including
people who previously offered oral testimony on October 1, may provide oral and written
testimony for the new Public Hearing scheduled on October 24.
